David Wilkus Prominent Communal Sonnenblicks Honored for Work at Home for Abed
A decade of dedicated service pervisor of education for the urn as a token of appreciation
Leader, Marks His 65th Birthday
was given tribute Sunday, at a Union of American Hebrew for their devoted effort.
A grateful community -will
join in congratulating David
Wilkus, one of its most active
workers, on his 65th birthday,
which he will observe this Sat-
urday.
Born in Detroit, May 4, 1892,
Wilkus, a graduate of the old
Central High School, has lived
here all his life and has been
active in the real estate man-
agement business.
His parents were among
Detroit's early pioneers. His
father was engaged for many
years in the retail business.
Former president of Temple
Beth El and North End Clinic,
both - of which he still serves as
a member of their board of di-
rectors, Wilkus is - a former
Vice-president of the Jewish
Welfare Federation - and a for.
mer board member of Sinai
kospital.
He is to this day - one of the
leaderi in the Allied Jewish
Campaign, which he has served
from its inception, and is an
adviser in the real estate divi-
sion.
He is especially proud of
the services he was able to
render, during . the years of
the large influx of displaced
persons from. Germany, with
his asistande - in supplying
housing for the newcomers.
He .continueS to ,serVe as a
member of the board of Re-
settlement Service and in aid-
ing ,refugees -in that capacity.
Wilkus --is a member of the
Detroit Real Estate .Board, Ex-
celsion Club, Great Lakes Club
and Franklin Hills Country
Club, and the -Masonic Order,
including.. the MOSIein Temple.
Wilkus was. married to , the
former Debbrah Lorenz on Aug.
30, 1918. They have a' son,
James, who is associated in the
Ai Congress_ Women

rectors of Detroit's Jewish
Home for the Aged. The dinner,
held at the Lee Plaza Hotel, was
attended by 150 associates and
officers of the board and wo-
men's auxiliary of the Home.
Greetings were extended by
Gus D. Newman, president of
the Home,' Mrs. Sam Newman,
women's auxiliary president,
and Isidore Sobeloff, executive
vice-president of the ,Jewish
Welfare Federation. Milton
Mahler was toastmaster at the
event. •
Mr. and Mrs. Sonnenblick as-
sumed "administrative leadership
of the Home in 1947; upon - the
retirement of its first director,.
Dr. Otto HirSch.
Born in Austria, - Mr. Sonnen-
blick came to this country at
the age of .15 with his parents.
After graduating from , New
York University, he attained a
lawdegree at Columbia Univer-
sity. In 1931 he married the
former Eve Wiener.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Two
Jewish physicians, Dr. Shandor
Veres and K or n e 11 Donath,
refugees from Hungary, recently
brought to Canada by the Inter-
national Refugee Office, sailed
on the Zim liner, Israel, to
settle permanently in Israel, the
Jewish Agency for Palestine an-
nounced.
Dr. Veres, in his early forties,
was accompanied by his wife
and two children'. Dr. Donath
is a widower and has a on in
Israel. Both men felt they could
render a great service by. prac-
ticing their profession in Israel.
"We are grateful to the Ali-
yah department of, the Jewish
Agency for its cooperation in
aiding. us to realize our plans
to live in the Jewish State,"
they declared on departure.

The Jewish Home for the
Aged, was inaugurated here
through the efforts of leaders
in. the Jewish Free Burial So-
ciety. From a remodeled old
residence on Brush and Edmund
Place, the Home was enlarged
to two houses joined by a cor-
ridor. In 1937 a new Home sur-
rounded by landscaped grounds
opened at its present location,
11501 Petosky.

Mrs. Sonnenblick, a native of
New York City, received her
B.A. degree at the City College
of New York. After achieving
a degree in social work, at the
age of 20 she obtained an L.L.D.
from Brooklyn College. She
then assumed a position as a
supervisor for the N.Y.C. Wel-
fare Department.
