A series of anti-Jewish dis-
turbances in various European
cities has met with proteSts, not
alone from the Jewish com-
munities involved, but from
government and Christian lead-
ers.
The latest incident was the
desecration of a Jewish ceme-
tery at Salzgitter, one of a reg-
larly recurring series of dis-
turbances in West Germany.
After 80 headstones were
overturned and a straw figure
daubed with the inscription
"Germany Awake, . Israel Per-
ish," local and federal officials
posted reward offers to aid in
the hunt for vandals.
Condemnations were issued
by the Christian Democratic
Union, Social Democratic Party,
German Trade Union Federa-
tion and Hamburg Society for
Jewish-Christian Cooperation.
Students at Bonn .University, in
telegrams to the Central Jewish
Council in Germany and the
Israel Mission in Cologne ex-
pressed their "horror and dis-
gust" for the actions.

Following his unanimous re-
election as president of the
Michigan Region; Zionist Or-
ganization of America, Leon
Kay, Detroit industrialist and
communal leader, announced
that he would leave Tuesday
for his fourth visit to Israel.
The Detroit industrialist and
communal leader was re-elected
at the region's eighth annual
convention, held last weekend
in ,Grand Rapids.
Morris M. Jacobs, a past
president of the region, was
named honorary president, and
other officers elected were

Leonard L. Radner, Harry
Binder of Flint and Thomas
Horwitz. Grand - Rapids, vice-
presidents; Milton S. Marwil,
treasurer; and Rabbi Harold
Richter, South Haven, secre-
tary.
In his presidential address,
Kay called upon delegates to
rededicate themselves toward
mustering maximum moral and
material support for Israel, and
assailed Secretary of State
Dulles for yielding to Nasser
on the Suez issue and King
Saud on the question of dis-
crimination against American
Jews.
Dr. N. • S. Fatemi, Iranian
dilomat and scholar, who was
guest seaker at the closing ban-
quet, urged President Eisen-
hower to use his influence and
prestige to negotiate a peace
between Israel and the Arabs.
He said that the serious de-
velopments of the Middle East
do not stem from the establish-
ment of Israel, but are the re-
sults of poverty, disease and
corruption.
In a resolution, the delegates
called On the Administration to
insist on restoration of UN con-
trol in the Gaza Strip and to
assure Israel's right to free
passage through Suez and the
Gulf of Aqaba.
The importance of the Jew-
ish National 'Fund to Israel's
security was underscored when
the delegates resolved to plant
a forest in Israel in the name
of the Michigan Zionist Region.

tive council were Rabbi Milton
