TORONTO — A resolution which would have prevented officers of the Union of Ameri- can Hebrew Congregations from participating with leaders of other American Jewish organiza- tions in controversial . political issues was overwhelmingly de- feated Tuesday' at the Union's biennial convention here. The action of the delegates was an endorsement of the policies of Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath, president of the UAHC, who has participated in the actions of the Presidents Club, . composed of presidents of 17 major Jewish Zionist and non-Zionist groups. Delegates from Nor-folk, Va., presented the resolution to the assembly—which is attended by several thousand active mem- bers of Reform Jewry from all parts of the U.S. and Canada— which stipulates that the Union "must avoid helping to create the public impression that all Jews are of one mind on any military, political, economic ocr .diplomatic issue." The resolution demanded that any previous decisions of the central body of Reform Jewry authorizing such participation and actions on the part of the president of the organization or other leaders of UAHC be rescinded. The resolution met with strong opposition on the part of many delegates, and was immediately counteracted by a recommenda- tion presented to the general assembly by the resoliitions committee, whiCh fecoannlended that the "Norfolk resolution" be disapproved. .
