Passover at West Olive
Observed by Ex-Christians
D.
Editor, The Jewish News:
How different was this night
of Passover from other Pass-
. over nights at West Olive, Mich.,
among the former Christians who
have, as they maintain, "re-
turned" to the Israelite faith?
In the words of William
Goodin, leader of' the com-
munity, "This ' is the first time
the weather has been mild and
pleasant in over 10 years of
sacrificing the Passover unto .
YHVH our God."
The "lamb without blemish,
a male of the first year" was
taken from "among the goats,"
killed Wand roasted with fire.
Along with traditional Pass-
over foods it was eaten by
representatives of some eight
families. The story of the first
Pasosver, along with the Bibli-
cal instruction for its continued
celebration, was read and dis-
cussed during and after the
meal.
Also discussed was the gen-
eral situation in the State of
Israel and the status of "Israel
and Judah" in the lands of the
diSp-ersion.
By dawn, all that was not
eaten of the lamb, along with
skin, . bones and other remains,
was consumed by fire, according
to the Biblical commandment.

tiative of founding a Jewish.
day school (long overdue) had
to come from a group of Jew-
ishly spirited men and women,
and not from an organized
communal body, such as the
author of this letter has for
years been advocating. This .is
another instance which proves
the undisputed need of a cen-
tral educational agency in the
Motor City.
It is also regrettable that the
initiators of this project have
not consulted with the Direc-
tors' Council about the various
aspects of establishing a school.
Had they done so, they un-
doubtedly would have been ad-
vised to concentrate , all their
efforts and energies on setting
up a strong organization for a
day school and assigning all
technical matters to an espe-
cially chosen executive body.
Nevertheless, ,' the propound-
ers of a modern, progressive
Jewish day school in our city
deserve our kindest wishes and
wholehearted cooperation.

Seminary Students - Appeal
for Israel Future Teachers
Editor,
Jewish News
The "Appeal for Teachers—
For Israel's Future," sponsored
by the students of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of Amer-
ica, is trying to raise $1500 for
six 050 scholarships for young
Israelis to attend a teaches
seminary in Israel.
The Appeal is an attempt to
alleviate the acute shortage of
teachers in Israel's Nege v,
where trained leadership is
needed to aid adjustment to
modern life and thought for Is-
rael's new Oriental immigrants.
The scholarships will give six
desperately poor, new Israelis a
chance they otherwise will
never have: to train their minds
and to develop their skills for
the building.. of Israel's future.
Readers are urged to send
checks payable to "The Student
Body, Jewish Theological Sem-
inary" in care of me.
Sincerely yours,
JACOB NEU SNER

Over 30 men gathered at
Jackson State Prison last week
for the annual Passover seder
Conducted for Jewish prisoners
by Rabbi Joshua Sperka and
Cantor Hyman J. Adler.
Rabbi Sperka has been spirit-
ual leader to Jewish prisoners
at Jackson for 16 years, and has
conducted the seder yearly since
that time.
State Corrections Commis-
sioner Saul Levin had the diffi-
cult task of speaking of the sig-
nificance of freedom—the mes-
sage of Passover — to the in-
mates.
He told them to "dedicate
yourselves to the dream and
hope of freedom (by fighting)
against ignorance, jealousy and
inequality." These, he said, can
be "the tyrants that can en-
slave your souls and your
minds."
