Aswan Dam Peril
Told by Professor

The Detroit Medical Journal,
in a recent issue, under the
heading "Snails Worse Than
Israelis—Aswan Dam Threatens
Egypt," carried this item:
"An army of small snails may
spell trouble for Egypt's pro-
posed Aswan Dam, says a Uni-
versity of Michigan zoologist.
"The snails are key links in
the life cycle of the schisto-
somes—parasites of the human
blood stream which cause the
debilitating disease, schistoso-
miasis. Usual result from the
disease is progresive weakness,
anemia and emaciation, • fol-
lowed by death from exhaus-
tion, pneumonia, ar secondary
infections.
"Associate Prof. Henry van
der Schalie says scientists fear
that construction of the pro-
posed $1.3 billion Aswan Darn
could make the disease pre-
valent enough to cancel all the
benefits Egypt expects to gain
from - the irrigation and power
procj ect.
"He notes that snore than !60
per cent of the people in north-
ern Egypt have schistosomiasis,
compared to only 5 or 6 per
cent in the southern part, be-
cause perennial irrigation in the
North makes an ideal environ-
ment for the snails. Construc-
tion of the dam, he says, would
create the same environment in
southern Egypt and pave the
way for the spread of snails
and sthistoso m i as i s."
