Three Nights to 'Go West'
Offered by SOC Hadassah
By the Oak-Woodser
Monday is the big night for
members of South Oakland
County Chapter of Hadassah.
It's the opening of a three-night
stand at Mumford High School
for "Go West, Already," the
newest production of the SOC
gals and their mates.
Monday's opening will climax
almost a year's preparation for
,the show. It began with the
writing of an adaptation of
"Annie Get Your Gun" last
summer.
Behind these skull sessions
were Burt Gordon, Leonore and
Morrey Reizen, Dorothy Silver-
man and Ethel Levine, who also
directs the production.
Music was written for two
brand new songs for the show
by Harvey Glassman and Shir-
ley Harris. And then, towards
the end of last year, tryouts
were set up for the first part
of January.
After sifting through over
100 applicants—and turning
away some terrific talent
which didn't exactly fit into
a Western setting—a cast of
45 was chosen—with 10 leads,
10 dancers and 25 in the sing-
ing chorus.
The first rehearsal was held
in mid-January; the dancing
line began on Feb. 1; and the
whole show was being rehearsed
by mid-February.
All the while, feverish be-
hind-the-scenes work was going
.on with the production staff.
As soon as Mrs. Maurice
Schiller, who is in charge of
costumes, heard the show was
to be on a Western theme, she
wrote away to a Mr. Sol Bern-
stein, a western outfitter in
Cheyenne, Wyo.
The Schillers vacationed there

last year, and, during Frontier
Days in the town, anyone
caught without Western garb
was sent to de hoco. So, the
Schillers went in to buy 10-
gallon hats.
In her letter, Mrs. Schiller
asked if there was any damaged
merchandise she could borrow.
And soon Bernstein was burn-
ing up the wires to his sup-
pliers. Result, two big boxes full
of frontier pants and jodpurs.
FREE!
Bernstein also offered the
loan of saddles, boots, chaps,
holsters and other Western ac-
cessories. So, the show offers a
real rootin-tootin frontier at-
mosphere.
This is only one area of a
tremendous crew of back-
stage personnel. They include
also Mrs. Sherwin Davidson,
producer; Mrs. Edward Le-
vine, director; Robert Collins,
musical director; Irwin
Wittcoff, assistant musical di-
rector; Sylvia Lee, choreo-
grapher; Albert Margolin, set
construction; Marshall Gra-
ham, props; RObert Colton
and Dan Mandlebaum, sound
technicians; Mrs. ,Harry Mo-
dell, make-up; and Mrs. Ger-
ald Schumer, scripts. Others .
are Mrs. Judy Brody, artist;
Mrs. Murray Sutkin, pub-
licity; and Mrs. Lee Goren,
social chairman.
One would think that this
year's production would be
plenty to keep the minds of the
SOC players on The show at
hand. But already, they are
thinking toward next year.
For instance: while rehearsing
one scene, a member of the cast
was overzealously playing a
romantic interlude, when he
was cautioned, "Hey, this isn't
sexy, it's strictly Platonic."
"Strictly Platonic!" W h y
that's a good title for next
year's show!
