The Haggadah is the book
which gives the order ("the
Seder") of the ceremony of
Paisover Eve. This is a folk book
in the true and best sense of
the -word; and was compiled by
the work of generations. Rather
than stressing any single
achievement of the Jews, the
Haggadah emphasizes the liber-
ation of the Hebrews from the
Egyptian yoke.
Since the Haggadah is used
exclusively in the Jewish home,
it has not been subject to the
scrutiny of rabbis in the way
that a traditional synagogue_
work would be. Lacking the re-
strictions of works for syna-
gogue use, the Haggadah has
been freely illustrated and il-
luminated.
