t
Druze Assistance to Jewish Settlers Recalled on 27th Anniversary of Pac

- An AM' Passover Feature
A handful of Jews and Druze
recently celebrated very mod-
estly the 27th anniversary of
the once secret Druze-Jewish
movement, which has now be-
.. come known as an almost
legendary example of coopera-
tion between two peoples.
Back in 1929, .this movement
rendered valuable service to
both communities. The two
groups had much - in common
during the Mandate: both were
minorities and both were re-

garded by the Moslem . majority
as the greatest enemies of the
Arab cause.
For the answer we turned to
Sheikh Labib Abu Rukun of
Isfiah, who was brought up like
any other Druze youth in the
traditional patriarchal environ-
ment of Isfiah, where his father
was a landlOrd and notable.
.Labtb remembers clearly that
a couple of his father Hassan's
Jewish friends, workers em-
ployed at the nearby Nesher
stone quarries, used to frequent

replaced him as organizer.
In view of attacks on the
Druze by Arab nationalists,
Labib went secretly to Syria
where he met the chieftains of
Jebel ed-Druze, revealing to
them the results of Druze-Jew-
ish cooperation. "Go back to
your village and come out open-
ly in favor of this movement,"
the powerful Sultan Pasha el
Atrash told Abu Rukun.
With this spiritual backing,
Druze from other villages joined
their brethren on the Carmel.

bib establishing a family — he
is the father of a boy and three
girls. Continuing his coopera-
tion with the Jews, despite OP-
position from elders in many
of the 18 Druze villages, he be-
came active in the Histradut's
Palestine Labor League.
When Jewish Agency leaders
were- detained by the British at
Latrun in 1946, Sheikh Labib's
house was entered by British
troops searching for Haifa's
fugitive labor leader Abba
Khousy.
In 1948,at a time when most
of the villages in the area were
still in Arab hands, Abu Rukun
and his men joined the libera-
tors of Haifa, suffering a num-
ber of casualties in the battle
for the town.
Soon afterwards, he and
other Druze chieftains ap-
proached the Chief of Staff
with a reqUest to form their
own Druze units, which later
helped the. Iirael Defense Army
to thrust towards Manara.
Since then, hunderds of
young Druze, inspired by Abu
Rukun, have volunteered for
