This is the story of a physi-
cian, humanitarian and linguist
who tried to bridge the gap of
foreign languages among na-
tions.
Dr. Ludwig Lazarus Zamen-
hof, the founder of Esperanto,
was born in Bialystok in 1850,
from a family of language
teachers.
The idea of creating an inter-
national - form of speech was
suggested to Dr. Zamenhof by
the polyglot character of his
native town. To the four dif-

Dr. Zamenhof died in Warsaw
in 1917. A monument was
erected to him in Warsaw in

Esperanto were issued in the
U. S., Canada, Soviet Russia and
many other countries.
