CASTONE MICHIGAN

NEW YORK—Microfilms of
nine Hebrew manuscripts from
the •ainous Guenzburg collec-
tion in Russia, haye • been .ae-
quired by the Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary of America, after
a 42 year quett, according to
Louis Finkelstein, Seminary
chancellor.
Most important of the micro-
films it "Yalkiit Tahned Torah"
a nth century commentary on
the Book of Leviticns, previ-
ously unavailable in" the West.
Compiled by. Rabbi Jacob of
Sicily, it is an anthology of
Midrathim (scriptural interpre-
tations by famous Palestinian
and BabSrloilin 'rabbis).- Rabbi
Jacob extensively quotes the
Midrash, "Yelarnderin," several
versions of which he studied in
the Orient.
Other newly-acquired micro=
films include "The Diwan,"
poetry of Rabbi Moses ben Ezra,
famous Spanith philosopher of
the Middle Ages, several codes,
medieval Talmudic commen-
taries, legal documents, theories
of calendar regulati'o n and
Italian communal 1 a w s. The
Guenzburg collection is esti- :
mated to contain 1,500 rare He-
brew and Jewish books a n d
manuscripts expected to throw
much light on the lost books of
that. period.
•
Baron David Guenzburg, be-
lieved to have been the only
Jewish member of the nobility
in Czarist Russia, died before
World Wat I, and Professor
Alexander Mane, late librarian
of the Jewish- Theological
Seminary, negotiat e d with
Guenzburg'S widow for the sale
of -ale library, but his efforts
'were forestalled by the out-
break of war.
In 1917 the Hebrew National•
Library bought the collection,
but never received it, since it
was soon expropriated by the
new government of the USSR.
After World War II, with the
aid of the Harvard Astronomer
Professor Harlow Shapley, Dr.
Franz Pick and members of the
U.S. State Departm e n t, t h e
Seminary's chancellor, Dr. Louis
Finkelstein , jre-opened c o r r e-
spondence to obtain the micro-
films.
In the - summer of 1956, rep-
resentatives of the New York
Board of Rabbis, visiting Rus-
sia, s a w the collection and
learned that it was finally being
New Light on Israel
catalogued. Rabbi' Morton Leif-
man of Congregation. -Beth El,
Montreal ; obtained nine - Micrb-
filmS during his stay in Russia
and dOnated them to the Semi=
nary Library .Where `they are
part Of the Professor Louis
Ginzberg Microfilm Collection.
Coincidentally, the familieki
of the late Professor Ginzberg
and Baron Guenzberg 'were
related during the 13th "centuiy.
