Today, however, the top stars are not Jewish. In the recent East-West All- Star game of the professional league, only Dolph Schayes of Syracuse represented the Amer- ican Jewish basketball star. All the others were huge boys from the towns and villages of Amer- ica, where the game of basket- ball has taken enormous hold. Still, Brandeis University and Yeshiva University have come a long way forward as hoop powers. And Lenny Rosenbluth of North Carolina was an All- America player by any collegi- ate standards. . Obviously, the best American player in amateur tennis ranks remains Dick Savitt, who in a recent exhibition, tore apart the delicate game of Budget Patty and won kudos from the court writers for a job well done. But Dick refused to return this year. Meanwhile, some kids might come up with the big service and win headlines. Herb Flam, the other top Jewish net star, has had his chance and has shown that he cannot whip the Roads of Australia, and so long as this will hold true, the tennis fathers will look elsewhere. Sammy G i a m- malva did well in Australia and the talk veered to him and away from Herb when next year's prospects were discussed. Baseball experts used to see the game developing in cycles. Later, there were only one ar two fine catchers, while earlier the game was loaded with them. It was said that these things happen this way. Maybe it is the same with Jewish athletes. ews in sports It is unlikely that Jewish prize fighters will emerge in the numbers they boasted in the 1920's, when immigrant boys fought their way out of poverty through the ring. But more and more Jews attend colleges, and so basketball, football, tennis and golf should open up even more than in the past. It may be that then we'll have a new group of outstanding Jewish athletes. Meanwhile, we must warm ourselves with past memories. Often, memories are best.
