Robert Briscoe
and Leprecohens

Wit mixed with wisdom at
the luncheon tendered the
Jewish Lord Mayor of Dublin,
Ireland, by Governor Furcolo
of Massachusetts, in .Boston.
The witty invocation by the
Rev. Joseph E. Manton, C.S.R.,
follows in. part:

Bustling Elath Harbor at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba
has seen many changes since the days when King Solomon
used its facilities to transport copper. Many of the changes, as
a matter of fact, have come in only the past few years, when
the port city multiplied its population many times over since
the Israelis started working to develop it. The harbor is shown
in the upper photo from the bridge of an Israeli frigate. In
the background are Jordan installations. The bottom photo
shows Israeli sailors sprucing up an American World. War II
surplus landing 'craft. The LC's are used to patrol the waters

Parking Meter Loss Has Israel
Towns in a Jam Financial, That Is -

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Parking
meters in Haifa and Tel Aviv
appear to have registered a net
loss in easing traffic congestion
and in producing revenues for
municipal Coffers.
The problem in Haifa appears
to be more complicated, as it
was explained to the Town
Council by Deputy Mayor M.
Fliman.
The Haifa meters, installed
several years ago, are owned
jointly by the municipality and
,an American investor, with a
60-50 split on the profits.
The trouble is, said Mr. M-
ilan, there haven't been any
profits. During the past year,
gross income was about 30-,00,0
pounds with operating expenses
26,000 pounds. Consistent in-
spection of meters to make sure
that Haifa motorists don't enjoy
unpaid-for parking makes the
whole thing a deficit proposi-
tion.
The other trouble—no relief
from traffic congestion—stems
from an unique arrangement

under which motorists can buy
monthly parking concessions for
12 pounds which entitle them to
park without additional charge
at any meter for as long as they
wish at any time. Minim said
they do.
Mayor Abba Kushil doesn't
like the parking concession ar-
rangement, which is very popu-
lar with motorists, and says • he
will have more to say on the
matter.
In Tel Aviv, where the meters
are operated -exclusively by the
municipality, the operation loses
money every year.

Emperor Haile Selessie
Plans Israel Visit

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Em-
peror Haile Selassie expressed

a desire to visit Israel and also
to inspect Ethopian Church • in-
stitutions there, in the first in-
terview he has ever given an

spondent Dan Bavli, of the
Jerusalem Post.
Bavli quotes the Xmperor as

-"Almighty God, our good and
gracious Father, we find our-
selveS a bit bewildered this
morning. You • know that the
first President of the Irish Re-
public was a Protestant; the
present Lord Mayor of Dublin
is a Jew; the news is going
around that "the Lakes of Kil-
larney belong to a Yank; and
the historians keep hissing in
our ears that St. Patrick was
a (Frenchman.' Please keep the
blackthorns fr o m becoming
bamboo.
-
"But when we remember that
Daniel O'Connell was named
after a Jewish prophet, and
Michael Collins after an arch-
angel whose name • is Hebrew,
and that - David is practically
a synonym for Harp, it makes
us realize that the Jordan and
the Shannon cannot be com-
plete strangers as each goes
running down to its separate
sea.
"Help us then, this morning
to hold high the brimming cup
of hOspitality- to a good and
great man who representh both;
and to • greet him not as a
stranger, but as a treasured
friend. And while he is over
here, make him in .the -best
sense of the . word a fair-
.weather friend, with none of
those 'soft' days they have in
Ireland, where, of course, it
never really rains — those are
only silver harp strings coming
down just.a few drops of .holy
water sprinkled on the wind-
shield. Deign to give him
(mostly) serene and mellow
weather so that he will go back
as bright as the colors in the
Book of Kells.
"And, dear God, stay the man
up with monumental patience
as he heroically endures a hun-
dred toastmasters from here to
the west coast who will gaily
imagine that the very fillings
in their teeth are fragments of
the Blarney Stone, as they ring
all. the obvious changes on a
Jewish mayor of Dublin. Help
the poor man not to be banquet
weary of all these glib attempts
to paint a green beard on
Moses, or by the end he will be
seeing little Leprecohens. . . ."

Beauty, as well as truth, is
eternal; but the beauty of
material things passes away,
fading and fleeing as mortal
belief.=-Mary Baker Eddy -
