Bonds Spur Copper Smelting

...

With funds provided by the sale of State of Israel Develop-
ment Bonds, construction forges ahead on a new copper smelt-
ing plant at Timna, site of the legendary Sing Solomon copper
mines, about twenty miles north of Elath. Shown above are
Israeli workinsen building a series of reservoirs for the plant,
which, when completed next year, is expected to produce
about 100 tons of copper a day. The reservoirs will help Israel
meet the"' increased, demand for pure copper in industrial
projects at home and for export to world markets.

The 'Arab World' Is
a Myth, Life Charges

f"izza vs. Falafel

NEW YORK; (AJP)—In its
comprehensive article on "The
Arab World," Life Magazine this
week painted the' following pic-
ture for its millions of readers:
"The lack of progress is evi-
dent everywhere in the. Arab
world: polygamy, though the
practice is vanishing; tribal
feudalism, especially in Iraq,
where a few powerful landlords
still control much of the acreage
and hold the tillers of the soil
in virtual serfdom; widespread
illiteracy; corruption and . ven-
ality of office; the vestiges of
slavery, and a vast gap between
the haves and the have-nots .. .
a world beset by cleavages—
dynastic, political and even re-
ligious—that cut it up in many
ways. -
"These divisions go so deep
that the observer despairs of the
Arabs ever acting sollectively
or effectively and .wonders how
they dare call themselves a
`world' or a 'nation' at all."

Hamilton's
Jewish
Relatives

By DAVID SCHWARTZ
(Copyright, 1957, JTA, Inc.)
Now, that the country is mark-
ing the 200th anniversary of the
birth of Alexander Hamilton, it
may be interesting to recall that
while Hamilton himself was n4
Jew, he had a Jewish half bro-
ther, Peter Levine, who lived in
S out h Carolina. Hamilton's
mother was married to a Jew,
who was much older than she.
They Were divorced and the
ex-Mrs. Levine then lived, with-
out benefit of legal wedlock,
with a Scotsman named/Hamil
ton. Alexander Hamilton was
the 'offspring of this second
union, Peter Levine was the off-
spring of her first marriage.
Hamilton -wag nqt a religious
person. He was opposed to the
motion that the Coristittrtional
Convention be opend with
prayers. He made slime jocular
remark to the effect that pray-
ing is a form of foreign inter-
vention. Washington ducked the
whole issue by accepting a mo-
tion to adjourn.
Hamilton was born in the
Virgin Islands to Which many
of 'the -Marranos had fled after
the Spanish 'Inquisition. One
very notable Jevi : born in the
Virgin Islands was the famous
painter, .Pisarro.

Palestinian Incident -
- Truth, is stranger than 'fiction.

Abraham Krintzky, one of the
founders of Ramath Gan in Is
rael, was recently reminiscing.
He -told of the time when the
'henchmen of Mr. Bevin in Pal-
estine were searching the land
for Jewish. arms. Krintzky was
afraid they might find a store
of arms located in a central
building in the settlement. One
part of the building was a gen--
eral store stocked with notions,
candy, etc.
Krintzky went down to take
a look and sure enough he
found a detail of British sol-
diers, . accompanied by blood-
hounds. Krintzky went into the
store, ordered the clerk to take
all the chocolate candy and put
it out front, unprotected.
The 'bloodhounds first sniffed
then began to eat the candy.
The British soldiers . soon found
the loot of chocolate and began
to eat. Then_ they piled up their
"jeep" . with the candy. Having
loaded the car to the brim, they
went off, diverted from their
search.
