WASHINGTON — Twenty-two
Jewish organizations. Tuesday
expressed opposition to humane
-slaughter bills , which, by im-
plications; give the: false im-
pression that Jewish kosher
methods of slaughtering animals
is inhumane.
Rabbi Isaac Lewin, of the
Union of Orthodox Rabbis of
the United States and Canada,
testified before the House s Agri-
culture subcommittee on behalf
of Jewish groups.
He told the subcommittee that
Jewish groups must "categoric-
ally reject" the language in a
number of bills wider considera-
tion because of their "false and
defamatory implication" against
"shehitah." He said Jewish
•groups were opposed to bills
where there arise "inescapable
implication" that slaughtering in
accordance with practices and
reqUirements of the Jewish re-
ligious faith is inhumane, but
permitted only because it is
prescribed by religion.
The House subcommittee Tues-
day heard witnesses on bills to
require humane methods in
slaughter of livestock and poul-
try.

Rabbi Lewin built a case for
the committee pointing to views
of experts who have certified
that "shehitah" is a humane
method of slaughtering.
The rabbi said "it is not sur-
prising that within the Jewish
community there is such unan-
imity of opposition to bills be-
ing considered by this commit-
tee. For many years," he said,
"the false slander that shehitah
is inhumane has been used as
a weapon- by those who would
exterminate the Jewish people.
It is significant that one of the
first acts of the Nazis upon
securing power in Germany was
to promulgate laws forbidding
shehitah under the guise of
humane considerations."

He said, "our concern is fur-
ther heightened by the fact that
even in England, where shehitah
is exempt from the humane
slaughtering law, that law has
been used as a springboard for
a continuous campaign to label
shehitah as inhumane and to
ban it." The committee asked
the rabbi to present to it the
suggestions of Jewish'organiza-
tions. Rabbi Lewin -said that a
supplement in writing would be
presented soon.

the Fact Sheet states that "since
November 1956, thousands have
been formally expelled by the
Nasser government. Many more
thousand - s have been forced to
emigrate 'voluntarily.' At least
10,000 of the estimated 35,000-
55,000 Jews in Egypt have had
to leave the country.
"Those who remain face eco-
nomic - strangulation; with their
goods and assets sequestered
and their funds blocked, it is
no longer possible for them to
earn a living. They- have been
given to understand that there
can be no future for Jews in
Egypt," the report concludes.

Ellises Succeed in Two Legal Moves
to Keep Hildy; Fig ht Extradition

MIAMI BEACH (JTA) — A
atholic judge accepted a peti-
tion for adoption from a Jewish
couple who have lived in hid-
ing for - - nearly two years in a
Struggle to keep a six-year-old
girl born to a Catholic mother.
After losing 22 appeals in
MasSachUsetts courts, and facing
extradition to Boston to face a
"kidnap charge," Mr. and Mrs.
Melvin B. Ellis were permitted
to 'file the petition in a Florida
Circuit Court.
Judge John Anderson at the
same time signed a temporary
injunction restraining Massa-
chusetts authorities from seiz-
ing blonde and blue-eyed Hildy
pending outcome' of the adop-
tion proceedings. The effect of
Judge Anderson's petition ac-
ceptance was to acknowledge
Florida's jurisdiction in the
case.
Hildy's natural mother, Mrs.
Marjorie McCoy Doherty, who
was unmarried when Hildy was
born• and signed the child over
to the. Ellises when Hildy was
10 days old, subsequently
claimed she did not know the
Ellises were Jewish. She wants
to put Hildy into a Catholic
institution. '
Ben Cohen, a Miami Beach
attorney who is representing the
Ellises without fee, said that
the local welfare agency has 90
days to complete an adoption
investigation and report back to
Judge Anderson. Final hearings
will follow within two weeks
after that. Massachusetts will
have an opportunity to contest
the application. .
The Ellises fled from Boston,
where Mr. Ellis had a substan-
tial 'dry cleaning factory, and
have moved from city to city
until they were traced to Miami
Beach.

The case has aroused world-

.

wide interests. The` Ellises, Gov.
Leroy Collins of Florida and
Acting Gov. Robert F. Murphy
of Massachusetts have been
flooded with mail, most of it
sympathetic to the couple.
Gov. Murphy refused because
of "technical errors" to sign ex-
tradition papers ordering the
return of the Ellises to Massa-
chusetts.
The Ellises were arrested in
Miami Beach on a fugitive war-
rant charging them with kid-
napping Hildy. They had fled
from Massachusetts after the
state Supreme Court h,ad ,ruled
against them iri 1955 after a
four-year court fight over cus-
today of the child.
Gov. Collins was reported to
have received more than 500 let-
ters begging him not send the
Ellis couple back to Massa-
chusetts.
