Orthodox-Workers Jain Unions
Members of Poale Agudat Israel, the labor movement of
ultra-orthodox workers in Israel, have joined the Trade Union
Department of Histadrut, the General Labor Federation. The
photo shows leaders of Poale Agudat Israel and Histadrut
celebrating the signing of this covenant. Left to right: Y.
Feffer, general secretary of PAL Benjamin Mintz, Deputy
Speaker of the Knesset, Aharon Becker, head of the Histadrut
Trade Union Department, and Itzhak Baskin, Histadrut
treasurer. The orthodox labor group had already participated
in Histadrut's Kupat Holim which gives medical care to
1,100,000 men, women and children in Israel.

Economics Professor Predicts Israeli Population
Will Reach 2,000,000 People by Endtt Next Year
NEW YORK, N.Y.—A predic-
tion that Israel's total popula-
tion will reach about 2,0-00,000
by the end of next year, was
made by an Israeli expert on
demography and statistics.
Dr. Roberto Bachi, first , dean
of the Eliezer Kaplan school
of economics and social sciences
at Hebrew University in Jeru-
salem, declared that a large
part of the recent increase was
due to immigration, a factor
often governed by political con-
siderations which make it diffi-
cult to forecast its size and
sources.
When Israel was established
as a state in May, 1948, he
pointed out, the country's popu-
lation was only 800,000. In esti-
mating increases. in the future,
one must keep the immigration
picture firmly in mind, he
cautioned.
The Italian-born professor,
who also serves as director of
Israel's Central Bureau of Sta-
tistics, participated in the re-
cently concluded meeting of

UN as Israel's representative.
The Hebrew University pro-
fessor asserted that Isarel's rate
of natural increase is high—
higher than that, of.many Jewish
comm-unities abroad. The size of
this increase, he explained, is
influenced by various factors
such • as the large proportion of
young people in the country;
the high proportion of fertile
Oriental Jews and the low death
rate. The average life expec-
tancy is 70 years of age, he said.
Israelis marry earlier than
persons in other Western-
oriented countries for several
reasons:
1. The immigrants have a
strong urge to settle down -and
as fast as Europeans who prac-
tice birth control to a much
greater degree.
Intermarriage among Jewish
groups of various origins is on
the increase in Israel, Dr. Bachi
says, but he points out that the
tendency is still strong for per-
sons to marry persons of similar
origins. His research discloses
that the place of birth is more
often considered than the occu-
pation of a potential mate.
Barriers still - exist in regard
to marriages of Orientals and
Europeans, of one group of
Orientals and another group
and of new immigrant groups
and old settlers.
Sabras, or native Israelis, he
says, tend to marry sabras or
choose their mates• from immi-
to take root.
