UNEF Can't Defend

Israel Against Raiders,
Military Analyst Says
NEW YORK, (AJP)—George
Fielding Eliot declared in a fea-
ture story appearing in the N.Y.
Journal - American that "the
UNEF has neither the training,
the weapons, the knowledge of
the terrain nor even the will to
.deal adequately with such des-
peradoes as make up the feda-
yeen murder-gangs.
"All it could accomplish," he
said, "if it were to be stationed
on the Israeli side of the border,
would be to hamper the Israeli
Army and border police in car-
rying out their own protective
measures."
Evidence Piles Up in Wanton Slaying
of Arab Villagers by Israeli Troops
JERUSALEM . (JTA) — Self- the second officer on trial, Maj.
incriminating testimony pre-
viously given by Lt. Gabriel
Dehan, one of the 11 border
policemen on trial for killing
47 Arab villagers at Kafr Kas-
sem on Oct. 29, was admitted
into the court record here.
The military court trying De-
han, another army, officer, and
nine enlisted patrolmen, ruled
that Dehan's testimony was
valid in spite of the fact that
he had not been warned, when
he made his original statement,
that it could be used against
him.
Dehan hacl stated, in pre-trial
questioning, that he had shot
at the Arabs under orders of
In his article, titled "Why UN
Troops Inside Border Would
Prove a Hazard To Israel," the
noted military analyst said that Noted Philosopher's Library
"a good deal of time and breath Given Brandeis University
is being wasted in double talk
about the UNEF being used to
patrol both sides of the frontier
between Israel and the Gaza
Strip. • Such a patrol, it is as-
serted, is necessary if the UNEF
is to provide protection for Is-
rael against the possible re-
, sumption of guerrilla raids
across the frontier.
"Bluntly, this is a lot of hog-
wash . . What the Egyptians
want is to have the UNEF pro-
tect them against Israel, while
they continue to exercise what

sonal philosophy library of the
late Ralph Barton Perry, philos-
opher and Harvard University
professor, has been presented
to the Brandeis University Li-
brary.
The presentation was made
by Prof. Perry's sons, Ralph
Barton Perry Jr. and Bernard
B. Perry. Included in the near-
ly 1000 volumes are first edi-
tions and rare volumes, many of
which are annotated and were
originally in the personal col-
lections of philosophers Josiah
Royce and William James. Many
of the volumes also contain an-

S. Malinski. The latter had or-
dered him, Dehan said, to show
"no sentiment" toward the vil-.
lagers returning home from the
fields without warning that a
curfew had been imposed on
Oct. 29, the day Israel started
its Sinai action.
Malinski reportedly said: "It
is better that several should be
dead, if that will insure quiet."
The prosecution contends that
the major's order was illegal
and that, therefore, Dehan
should have disobeyed it.
The court later heard a state-
ment by a third of the de-
fendants, Lance Corporal Sha-
lom Offer, who had been in
charge of the men who fired
on the Arabs. He testified that
he had ordered firing on three
truckloads of villagers after
they had tried to run away. "Lt.
Dehan witnessed the shootings
and did not intervene," Offer
swore.

state has served notice she will consider as "an act of war"
any Arab move to impede shipping in the Gulf or the Suez
Canal. In bottom photo is a view of the Israeli port of Elath,

where smoke rises from demolition of British ammunition
dumps as a result of the abrogation of the British-Jordanian
treaty. The mountains are in Saudi Arabia, which, with Egypt,
claim the gulf is territorial water, • implying that it will be
closed to Israel shipping.

New Drug May Assist the Nervous,
City of Hope Doctor Reports
BALTIMORE -- A possible
Fink between brain function, the
action of a chemical and the
effect of vitamin deficiency, in
brain tissues, was reported at
a symposium on the "Chemical
Environment of the Brain and
Consciousness" at the Univer-
sity ' of Maryland.
Dr. Eugene Roberts, chairman
of the department of biochem-
istry, City of Hope, Duarte,
Calif., suggested that the chemi-
cal known as gamma-aminobu-
tyric acid (GABA) may play a
key role in regulating the ac-
tivity of the central nervous
system.
In the course of studies on
the biochemistry of brain tissue,
Dr. Roberts reported in 1950
that GABA is present in high
concentrations in the gray mat-
ter of the brain and the spinal
cord. GABA was not detected
in many other tissues studied.
Further investigations showed
that GABA is formed in the
brain from glumatic acid—one
of the amino acids, which are
the basic "building blocks" of
protein—by an enzyme, glu-
tamic acid and decarboxlase.
The activity of this enzyme is
dependent on an adequate die-
tary supply of the vitamin,
pyridoxine, known as B-6..
Look for the cheerful green and yellow label
A deficiency of Vitamin B-6
causes a marked decrease in
activity of the enzyme, impair-
ing production of GABA. Dr.
Roberts suggested that this de-
crease might be related to the
convulsions which occur in both
humans and animals suffering
from such a deficiency.
Further studies are in prog-
ress at the City of Hope, Dr.
Roberts said, to determine the
mechanisms involved in GABA
metabolism in the brain and
spinal cord and the effect of
various drugs and chemical
agents.
These investigations by Dr.
Roberts, with Claude F. Baxter,
Ph.D., and others at the City
of Hope, are supported - in part
by a grant from the National
Multiple Sclerosis Society.
