A PROCLAMATION

By the Rabbinate of Detroit

Friday, April 5, 1957

W E, the Rabbis, serving the greater Detroit
Jewish community, appeal to our fellows Jews to

rally to the support of the 1957 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign in this hour of trial and challenge for our
people.

The State of Israel is engaged in a struggle for
its survival in the face of the hostility and unfriend-
liness by which it is now surrounded. Our generosity
should match the courage of our people in Israel.
Our response will reinforce their determination to
preserve their homeland as a free, secure and inde-
pendent fortress of democracy.

We must likewise uphold the hands of our
brethren in Israel in keeping their doors open to
Jews fleeing the oppression of Egypt and the terror
of Hungary. Our brothers are ready to share their
home and their life with those who need refuge.
Shall we not join them and share our substance so
that the uprooted and the exiled may be rescued and
rehabilitated?

Shall we not, to the utmost of our ability, par-
ticipate in the additional $100,000,000 Emergency
Rescue Fund, that is this generation _ 's Pidyon
Sh'vuim, the ransoming of the captives?

W E should see this year's Allied Jewish Cam-

paign as our response to human need, as our con-
tribution to Jewish dignity and freedom, as our
recognition of the bonds that join us to our brethren
everywhere, and as the expression of our resolve to
maintain a creative Jewish community. Our re-
sponse thus becomes the measure of our human
sensitivity as well as of our Jewish understanding
and loyalty. It is a test of our ability to assume in a
mature way the full measure of our responsibility.

E, as representatives of the religious life of
W
Detroit Jewry, urge with all earnestness and with a

full consciousness of the urgency of this critical hour,
that everyone among us play his part according to
his ability in this great enterprise of human service
and Jewish devotion. Let our response be a stimulus
for courage and faith to every Jew everywhere in
need of assistance, friendliness, brotherly love and
hope.

UR local and national community has built,
0
through the years, important institutions for the

education of our young, for the healing of our sick,
for the care of our aged, for families needing assist-
ance and guidance, for the defense of the democratic
way of life, and for the rights of minorities. These
agencies, which serve us so faithfully, are the pride
of Detroit Jewry. They must be enabled to carry
on their indispensable programs of instruction,
health, welfare and service.

T

HE Allied Jewish Campaign, the source of
their support, alone can insure their continued ac-
tivity and effectiveness in our midst.

The approaching festival of Passover should in.
spire us, who enjoy liberty, to give freely of our pos-
sessions for the liberation of the oppressed, for the
rescue of the imprisoned, and for the succor of the
needy. We shall be joining the ranks of all who are
fighting for freedom—freedom from want, from op-
pression, from fear, and from despair. Then indeed,
will our own observance of the festival of freedom
become deepened- in significance, elevated in spirit,
and enriched in satisfaction.

May the graciousness of the Lord, our God, be
upon us.
