Talk of Possible Split Over
Candidates in Oak Park Vote
By the Oak Woodser
Innuendos have been creeping
into conversations in Oak Park
over a Jewish-Gentile split in
the election of municipal candi-
dates in Monday's general elec-
tion.
The matter was brought
sharply into focus by one of the
four Jewish candidates seeking
election, when a supporter ad-
vised him to refrain from men-
tioning any participation in
Jewish affairs on the circulars
he is sending to voters.
The unsolicited . advice was
given in good faith—not that the
candidate try to hide his Jew-
ishness, but that he seek, to
avoid creating any controversy
which might lead to a widening
of this split.
We frankly doubt that there
are many people to the Jew-
ish community who conscious-
ly are planning to vote for
candidates just because they
happen to be Jewish, just as
we suspect there are few Gen-
tile families who will cast
their ballots 'solely - for the
purpose of electing a non-Jew.
If such a split should develop,

we feel it will be for social rea-
sons rather than purposeful in-
tent because of the basic make-
up of the community's popula-
tion.
While there has never been
a breakdown according to reli-
gion, the city's Jewish popula-
tion is probably close to the 50.
percent • mark at the present.
Many Jewish families • have
known each other for a number
of years, and certain Jewish
candidates a r e old friends,
schoolmates or business associ-
ates of,many people in the com-
munity.
In an election, in which every-
one seems to be interested in
correcting the same things —
mainly the flooding of base-
ments and certain minor im-
provements—there are no basic
issues.
Hence, the election is taking
on the proportions of a popu-
larity contest. The fact that the
election is non-(artisan adds to
this general feeling.
From what we have seen and
heard, all of the four Council
candidates—David H.- Shepherd,
Mrs. Harriet Arnowitz, Joseph
M. Suiter and Samuel Hammer-
stein—are all vitally interested
in their city government.
Suiter is the incumbent
Councilman (the other was
defeated in the Primary) ;
Shepherd is president of the
Southwest Oak Park Improve-
ment Association and regular
attendee at Council meetings;
Mrs. Arnowitz has-headed nu-
merous Oak Park civic organ-
izations and led several com-
munity fund - raising drives;
and Hammerstein is a re-
spected businessman in the
area.
The two candidates for Jus-
tice of the Peace are incumbent
Frank Glabach, while his oppo-
nent is Burton R. Shifman who
is presently a _member . • of the
Oak Park School Board.
Actually, Shifman is the only
one of the candidates to raise a
specific objection to a city func-
tion. He has stated that he fa-
vors abolishing Saturday court
sessions because of the large
number of observant Jews in
the city.

Regular Schedule
of Court Hours_
A regular schedule of court
and office hours for Oak Park's

the points advocated by Burton
R. Shifman, an attorney who
seeks election to the four-year
post in Monday's election.
Shifman, who is a member of
the Oak Park Board of Educa-
tion, the Oak land County
School Officers Association and
a • board member of the John
Dewey School PTA and Oak
Park Pre-School Parents Asso-
ciation, advocates rigid enforce-
ment against reckless and drunk
drivers, especially because of
the. large number of children
in the city.
A practicing attorney, Shif-
man is a member of the Detroit,
Okland County and American
Bar Associations, the State Bar
and the American Judicature
Society.
He also is a member of Oak
