Group Here Plans New Day School

Plans are being formulated
for the establishment of a pro-
gressive Jewish Day School in
Detroit. A group headed by
Leon Kay, Morris Schaver,
Morris Lieberman, - Max Biber,
Harry Keller, Wolf Snyder and
Philmore Leemon, in conjunc-
tion with some local educators
and rabbis, have expressed the
view that "a Day School provid-
ing a superior type of Hebrew
and general training for Jewish
children of elementary school
age would contribute greatly to
the advancement of education in
Detroit.
The leaders of the new school
effort have emphasized that this
new venture is unique and will
not duplicate any of the exist-
ing educational institutions here.
"It is motivated by the desire
to further Jewish education and
living in this country by creat-
ing the means and facilities for
imparting a harmonious blend-
ing of the Jewish and American
environment, stated a spokes-
man for the group. "This type
of school is now operating suc-
cessfully in other cities and we
are convinced that Detroit Jew-
ry would benefit immeasurably
from one.
The school expects to com-
mence operating in September
1957 with a kindergarten and
first grade. The kindergarten
will provide an informal atmos-
phere where the child will be
introduced to school life and
social situations that will aid
and teach him to adjust to chil-
dren of his own age. The prim-
ary grades of the school will
be planned to offer a rich pro-
gram of curricular activities and
experience ministering to the
needs of the children and em-
phasizing the basic skill of
reading. The Hebrew phase of
the program will be designed to
enhance the cultural and spirit-
ual growth of the child by
stimulating his interest in the

rich heritage of Judaism and
Israel.
A meeting of parents of pros-
pective pupils will be held
Wednesday, 8:30 p.m., at the
Labor Zionist Institute. Inter-
ested persons are invited. Those

NOW AVAILABLE AT

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Emi-
gration of Jews from Poland to
Israel is now in effect halted
through new regulations issued
by the Polish government, it
was reported in a cable from
Warsaw to the New York
Times.
Declaring that large numbers
of Jews have been returning
from the Soviet Union to Po-
land as repatriates, the War-
saw report stated:
"Until last Monday virtually
all of these Jews went on to
Israel as soon as transport and
other arrangements could be
made for them. However, this
situation has changed. Polish
police headquarters has reject-
ed all emigration applications
of Jews from the Soviet Union.
These Jevis haVe been told that
since they returned here as
Poles they must assume Polish
citizenship and apply for per-
mission to emigrate "in a nor-
may way."
A Foreign Ministry spokes-
man declined to give any rea-
son for the change in regula-
tion, the report • continued.
There was speculation that the
change had resulted from re-
presentations made by the So-
viet Union, possibly after Egypt
had brought the situation to
the notice of the Soviet govern-
ment. .
