The Suburban Community

Mayor to Get Up His Irish
Wf or Opening of AJ Campaign,

By the Oak-Woodser
Rarely has a visit to this com-
munity stirred up as much en-
thusiasm and interest as the
coming of Dublin's Jewish Lord
Mayor, Robert Briscoe.
Last Sunday, when the Jews
were celebrating Purim and the
Irish observed St. Patrick's Day,
the name of Mayor Briscoe crept
into many suburban conversa-
tions.
Chief among the observations
seemed to be that Mayor Bris-
coe's tour of 20 American cities
was leaving in its wake a wave
of good feeling.
Mayor Briscoe will be in
Detroit to open the Allied
Jewish Campaign in our com-
munity this Thursday evening,
at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. His
message is certain to be in-
spiring because of his - long
interest in and work for the
Jewish state.
Never before, since Israel's
creation nine years ago, has the
need for help been so great, and
never before has that need been
so. obvious.
Embattled and surrounded by
vengeful neighbors, our Israeli
brethren still do not have peace
o f mind about their security .
They face constant danger from
attack, even after waging a
successful campaign to wipe out
enemy installations, and their
economy is still threatened by
question marks which hang over
Suez and Aqaba.
Still, faced by many dangers
and threatened by economic
strangulation, as it has been
for nine years, Israel • is plan-
ning to open its doors this year
to 100,000 refugees—exiles with
only a - few personal possessions
and no. wealth to contribute to
the country—from Egypt,. Po-

land, Hungary and other lands

Here is the answer to the
question as to why Israel
exists. Not only is it historic
justice and religious fulfill-
ment, Israel's existence is
prediCated on the humanitar-
ian principle that all Jews .
here are welcome.
It is for this major reason—
the ingathering of the exiles—
that Israel must succeed. Every
Jew must have the opportunity
to go to a land where he is not
only wanted, but needed. Every
Jew must know that if he is
wanted in no other country, he
is desired in Israel.

Among the first clubs to be-
come a part of the 10 Mile Road
Branch of the Jewish Center,
were the Debettes. Originally
started at the Esther Berman
branch of the center 1 years
ago, the group met at various
members' houses until the new
Center was opened.
So far, the club's activities
have included raising money for
CARE packages, and packing a
basket of food: clothing and
games for a needy family.
On the social side. they have
staged three partits for their
members and are in the process
of planning a fourth. The group
is sponsored by Wayne State
University student Sandra Peto-

Officers of the club are Char-

Wolf, vice-president; Bonny
Benette, secretary; Gloria Jerris,
treasurer; and Car o l Meyer,
Council delegate.
