Comes of Age in Israel

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The clash
between the modern and the
old fashioned Way of • doing
things typical of the develop-
ment of western societies has
emerged in Israel in a new area
—Self-service in grocery shop-
ping. -
The debate started when
Hamashbir Hamereazi, the big
cooperative, announced plans to
set up self - service grocery ,
stores. The proposal was prompt-
. ly challenged by members of
the Merchants Association.
Members of the Association
met with officials of the food
dirision of the Ministry of Com-
merce and Industry. The mer-,
chants argued that in a coun-
try of mass immigration, it was
unfair to interfere with the
"easiest means" by which many
newcomers could make a living.
The Ministry officials gave a
courteous hearing to the argu-
ments of the merchants and
gave . . the inevitable verdict.
They sympathized with the
merchants but they said they
faVor - self-service stores as be-
ing in line "with general social
progreSs."
