Dinner for Rabbi Stollman
Inspiring Evening for Jewry

Modestly putting aside the
many tributes extended to him
at Tuesday evening's annual
dinner of the Council of Ortho-
dox Rabbis and the Merkaz,
Rabbi Isaac Stollman called on
the gathering of 250 people to
strengthen their efforts for Jew-
ry, both locally and in Israel.
The dinner, held at Rainbow
Terrace, honored Rabbi Stoll-
man, Dean of the Council of
Rabbis,`on the publication of his
four-volume commentary on the
Bible and on his recent election
of national president of the
newly - merged Mizrachi-Hapoel
Hamizrachi, religious Zionist
organization.
Speaking in Yiddish, Rabbi
.Stollman said that it was with
deep humility that he accepted
the national office. He added
that he was certain it was of-
fered to him, not because he was
the most outstanding man, but
because he was a soldier in the
_
ranks - of Jewry.
He commented on the mass
meeting of Jewish organiza-
tions, held a day earlier at
MadiSon Square Garden, and
said that every Jew was with
him at that moment in sup-
port of Israel's position in the
Middle East.
Of the many moving tributes
given Rabbi Stollman, the most
touching was that of his son,
Rabbi Samuel Stollman, of
Windsor's Cong. Shaar Hasho-
m.ayim.
The son related two Talmudic
incidenti—both favorite stories
of his father—which represented
the spirit of the tradition of the
Jewish people, in which light
all sons see their fathers. -
The genuine admiration and .
respect a son holds for his father
--a disappearing sign in this day
when an embrace of a man and
another man is ,considered a dis-
play , of softness — was sealed
with a kiss on the cheek and
_quiet, hurried and smiling words
between the two.

Another son, Shafer, now a
student at a Cleveland Yeshiva,
presented a Sefer as a' gift from
the family. Earlier, Rabbi Stoll-
man 'had received a scroll from
the Council and the Merkaz,
which read in part:
"For 35 years of selfless de-
votion to Israel, kashrut; sabbath
observance, redemption of the
Holy Land and for service to
the communil, and the indivi-
dual."
An unscheduled speaker on the
program was Judge Theodore
Levin, president of the Jewish
Welfare Federation, who brought
greetings for the community and
his personal greetings as a
neighbor of Rabbi Stollman's for
19 years.
Rabbi Leizer Levin, mentioned
frequently throughout the eve-
ning. as Rabbi Stoliman's dear-
est friend, said that his colleague
was like Moses, not alone a
leader but a builder of Jewish
tradition and an inspiration to
his followers.
David J. Cohen, chairman of
the evening, outlined the pur-
pose of the dinner as "not just
a social affair; but• as a rallying
force for traditional Judaism in
Detroit" He stressed the func-
tions of the Council and Merkaz
in strengthening traditional Ju-
daism, keeping the sabbath, aid-
ing the establishment of new
synagogues a n d maintaining
kashrut.
Other participants in the pro-
gram were Rabbi Leib Bakst,
who lea the benshen in place of
the ailing Rabbi Moses Fischer;
Rabbi Charles H. Rosenzweig,
who opened the prograrh; Rabbi
Israel Flarn, who read Psalm 46
as a prayer for Israel's survival
and well being; and Rabbi Sam-
uel H. Prero, who made the
scroll pregentation to Rabbi
Stollman.
A musical program, featured
Cantor Hyman Adler, who was
accompanied by Bella Goldberg
on the piano.
At ceremonies Feb. 17 in
New York, at which Rabbi
Stollman was installed as na-
tional president of Mizrachi-
Hapoel Hamizrachi, he ac-
cepted the post with the prom-
ise that he would "seek to
achieve acceptance by world
and Jewish leadership of the
eternal religious- connection
between Israel and its faith."
Rabbi Stollman, during his
tenure as national president,
will reside in- New York.
