WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
Eisenhower Administration fight
to force Israel out of its re-
maining " positions in the Sinai
Peninsula aroused a degree and
strength of opposition _ at home
and abroad to an American
policy which may be without
precedent in recent history.

The steadily-growing "part-
ners-in-misery" friendship o f
France and Israel reached new
heights this week when a
French Foreign Ministry spokes-
man announced that France
would send ships through the
Strait of Tiran, which Egypt
blockaded until Israeli troops
seized the gun positions at
Sharm el Sheikh last November,
to help emphasize the interna-
tional character of the water-
way.
France also made knOwn its
readiness to undermine any
American sanctions with a
promise by Pierre Gilbert,
French- Ambassador to Israel,
that France would . grant Israel
enough credit to buy from
France those goods which Is-

Cartoon Shows Ike

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The
feeling of' the average Israeli
toward President Eisenhow-
er's pressure tactics was
neatly expressed by a car-
toon in Maariv. The cartoon
showed an angry Mr. Eisen-
hower swinging his golf club
menacingly toward a small
Israeli boy hiding in a hole
on the golf course. The cap-
tion was "Get away. Let me
play."

Dingell Ridicules
'White House Piety'

In a speech in the House of
Representatives on Feb. 21, Con-
gressman John D. Dingell, of
Detroit, criticized President
Eisenhower's standards, as he
applied them to Israel. He
charged that the President
"stands for sanctions for Israel
and moral pressure for the So-
viet," and called' it "a pretense
of virtue and piety in the White
House and State Department."

State Democrats Ask Dulles Ouster

Because of his advocating
sanctions against Israel and
other policies, the Michigan
Democratic Party, at its recent
convention in Grand Rapids,
recommended immediate retire-
ment of John Foster Dulles as
Secretary of State.
"Egypt, whose continued state
of declared belligerency against
Israel and whose blocking of
the Suez and Gulf of Aqaba
are in flagrant violation of
treaty, the UN Charter and
resolutions, is tolerated and
Russian oppression of Hungary
is terhporized with," the resolu-
tion denounced.
Dulles, "whose advice is mis-
leading the President," has
maintained poricies which have
"split us from our traditional
friends b y misunderstandings
and unfulfilled promises . . .
strengthened the hands of dic-
tators and enemies of our coun-
try. This double standard of
morality has dismayed the Am-
erican people, earned condem-
nation of members of Congress
of both parties and is jeopar-
dizing American influence as a
moral force in the free world,"
the resolution continued.
The convention resolved that
"Dulles be dismissed imme-
diately" if he does not retire
"to avoid international embar-

rassment" and policies bringing
us to "the brink of war."
In other resolutions, the con-
vention called for abolishing
the National Origin Quota Sys-
tem, pooling unused quotas to
unite families, bring in technical
skill, and admit racial, religious
and political refugees, eliminat-
ing Asia-Pacific ancestry pro-
visions of the McCarran-Walter
Act, cancelling quota mortgages
and admitting parolees as non-
quota emergency immigrants.

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—State
Department- officials denied
there was any political signifi-
cance to a slowing of the rate
of granting visas to Israeli na-
tionals to enter the United
States.
A report from Jerusalem said
that in the last few days the
Embassy has been telling Is-
raelis that visas which they had
been promised could not be pro-
cessed because the United States
ban on travel of Vi.rnerican na-
tionals to the Middle East had
left the Embassy shorthanded.
The report pointed out that
althbugh the ban has been in of-.
feet since last October, - the hold-
