The format and approach of
the Middle East Institute spon-
sored by the Midrasha, College
of Hebrew studies was discussed
by attendants of the • first in-
stitute session last Monday night
in the Esther Berman Branch
of the United Hebrew Schools.
Institute speakers will an-
alyze Middle East issues from
an academic point of view rath-
er than an emotional one, ex-
plained Albert Elazar, UHS su-
perintendant. At each session, a
guest lecturer will speak for an
hour. Then institute registrants,
who will be seated at tables,
will form 10 or 11 "buzz
groups," examining the eve-
ning's topic and formulating
questions for the 45-minute
seminar discussion afterward.
Dr. Maurice Shudofsky, Mid-
rasha faculty chairman, re-
viewed worthwhile academic
works, listed on bibliographies
distributed at the first meeting.
Elazar led a brief discussion on
Middle East geography. Mrs.
Carl Schiller presided at the
session.
First institute speaker will be
Prof. Preston Slosson, head of
the history department at the
University of Michigan, on "The
Political Configuration of the
Middle East: From the End of
World War I to the Present."
Attendance is limited to insti-
tute regisrants for maximum ef-
fectiveness Of discussion with
lecturers.
The session, beginning
promptly at 8:15 p.m., will con-
clude at 10.15 p.m. Attendance
is limited to institute registrants
for maximum effectiveness of
discussion with lecturers.
Community leaders have
been invited to enroll in the
Institute. There still is time
to do so by calling the United
Hebrew Schools. There is no
charge for participation in
these leadership discussion ses-
sions.

HUC-JIR Will Award 10 Honor Degrees March 7

Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institution of-Religion will mark
its 82nd anniversary with
Founders' Day exercises in New
York, March 7, with the presen-
tation of honorary degrees to 10
leaders of American religious,
cultutral and humanitarian en-
deavor.
Dr. Nelson Glueck, president
of the College-Institute, will
confer the degrees at exercises
at the New York School, 40 W.
68th St., at 8:30 p.m.

Honorary degrees will be awarded
to Rev. Harry Emerson Fosdick;
David E. Kaufman, former U.S. Min-
ister to Bolivia and Siam; Rabbi I.
Edward Kiev, HUC Librarian; Philip
M. Klutznick, president, Bnai Brith;
Moses A. Leavitt, JDC executive vice-
chairman; Samuel D. Leidesdorf,

New York leader; Moshe Maisels,
editor of Hadoar; Rabbi Max Reich-
ler, Brooklyn; Rabbi Maurice Zig-
mond, director of Harvard Hillel
Foundation, Cambridge, MasS.; Rabbi
Arthur Zuckerman, director of
N.Y.C.C. Hillel Foundation.

Gestapo Officials Entitled
to Public Officers Rights
FRANKFURT (JTA) —Even
though Gestapo service was
hitherto excluded from the
scope of a general pension law
passed • some years ago, the
Hesse Administrative Court has,
in effect, removed the "discrim-
ination" against Gestapo offi-
cials and put them on almost the
same footing as other public
officials with respect to pension
benefits.

tion of the former's project, "Operation Border Settlement."
Working through Club One, Ezra Aid to Israel collected the
sum through various projects to assist Pioneer Women and its
sister organization in Israel, Moatzot Hapoalot, in providing
facilities, mostly for children, for new families in strategic

Naval Academy
Accepts Detroiter

Nineteen-year-old Paul Lang
has been accepted at Annapolis
Naval Academy, having achieved
the highest grades on recent
competitive examinations. The
son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Lang, of 18621 Snowden, he
graduated cum laude from Mum-
Lord High School, where he was
class valedictorian.
Paul, who was recommended
for the academy by Sen. Patrick
V. McNamara, is now a fresh-
man at Wayne State University.
He majors in mathematics and
science; and is active in the Air
Force ROTC program. In June,
he will begin studies towards
an Annapolis bachelor of science
degree.
Interested in Jewish affairs,
he edited the newspaper of Isko-
witz Chapter, AZA, of which he
was a member. He is also affili-
ated with Bnai Brith Young
Men.
His father, an attorney, is a
member of Shaarey Zedek Men's
Club and received the Jewish
Theological Award for outstand-
ing service.

Truman to Receive
Citation in Omaha

OMAHA (JTA) — Former
President Harry S. Truman on
Sunday evening will make his
third appearance in two weeks
before a Jewish audience. He
will be guest of honor at the
fifth annual Citation Dinner of
Beth Israel Synagogue in
Omaha.
Mr. Truman will be presented
with a citation honoring him
for "consistently sympathetic
endeavors on behalf of Israel."
The former President ad-
dressed two major Jewish events
in Miami last week, the opening
dinner of the 1957 Bonds for
Israel conference at which Eddie
Cantor was honored on his 65th
birthday and the annual dinner
of the Combined Jewish Appeal
of Miami.
