Chajes, Bistritzky Works
to be Heard in Concert

Set August Date

Sunday evening's Jewish Mu-
sic concert, beginning 8:30 p.m.,
at the Davison Jewish Center,
will feature compositions by
Julius Chajes,. Rene Fr a n k,
George Gershwin, Lazare Srhin-
sky, Paul Ben-Haim, Herbert
Fromm and Zinovi Bistritzky.
Participants will include vi-
olinist Harvey Seigel, pianist
Betty Kowalsky, soprano Wyn
Garden Landis and baritone Irv-
ing Rosengard. Other artists to
appear are sopranos. Adele
Brown, Frances Cooperman and
Mary Freedland, mezzo-soprano
Leah Koven, baritone Harold
Landis, accompanied by Mildred
Levey. Chajes will conduct the
concert, to be highlighted by the
Center Choral Society.

Annual grants of up to $300
are being offered by the Leon
A. Cousens Scholarship Fund of
Detroit. The grants are being
made to students enrolled or
wishing to enroll in a graduate
program in the area of human
relations at the University of
Michigan, Michigan State Uni-
versity, Wayne State University
or the University of Detroit. _
Students must pursue a pro-
gram in one or more of the
following interest areas: civil
liberties, community - organiza-
tion, economics, .human rela-
tions, journalism, labor law,
political science, trade union-
ism and worker education.
The scholarship prograni is
sponsored by 100 associates of
the late Leon A. Cousens, a De-
troit labor attorney from .1937
until his death in November of
1955.
Cousens served as counsel to
the Hotel and Restaurant Em-
ployees Union, Local 705 and
to the Communication Workers
of America, AFL-CIO. Previous-
ly he had been editor of -the
Hotel, Bar and Restaurant Re- .
view and the Detroit Labor
News. He was active in the
Workmen's Circle and the Dem-
ocratic Party. Among the spon-
sors of the Fund are leaders
in Michigan political, labor,
community relations, church and
education circles.
The fund chairman, Mrs. Mil-
dred M. Jeffrey, community re-
lations director for the United
Auto Workers Union, AFL-CIO
stated that candidates must
possess general academic com-
petence, some measure of finan-
cial need, basic values in keep-
ing with the philosophy of the
honoree and evidence of partici-
pation or interest in community
issues. •
Closing date for application
for a 1957 grant is March 15.
The grantee will be selected by
April 15. Additional informa-
tion may be secured by writing
the Fund at 163' Madison, Suite
223, Detroit 26.
