Renews Appeal for Int ervention in Egypt

Black Record" as a "semantic
ruse, designed solely to divert
world opinion from the essen-
tial character of Egypt's anti-
Jewish campaign."
The study shows 'that the
Zionist movement has had little
influence among Egyptian Jews.
This is not surprising if only
because Egypt's 50,000 Jews, a
tiny minority in Egypt's total
population of 22,000,000, would
not have been so fool-hardy,
even if they so desired, to
espouse pro-Zionist or pro-Israel
attitudes since 1948, let alone
engage in any acts even remote-
ly inimical -to the security of
the Egyptian government."
Further, the document points
out, "the number of Jews af-
fected by the acts of internment,
expulsion and sequestration is
so large as to preclude any be-
lief that the target of Egypt's
wrath. are solely the 'Zionists
who 'allegedly menace Egypt's
security."
To document its charges, the
Congress survey cites a mass
• of data, including eye-witness.
accounts, reports by repu-
table journalists and agen-
cies, diplomats and official
Egyptian documents.
That Egyptian persecutions
"give no sign of abating" was
emphasized by DJ.... Prinz, who
said that "the International Red
Cross has just reported that 4,-
500 Jews are now being carried
on the rolls of the rabbinical
councils in Cairo and Alexan-
dria as 'entirely destitute.'
"Within the past few days,
Auguste Lindt, U.N. High Com-
missioner for Refugees, an-
nounced that during-the next
six months he expects 13,800
Egyptians to arrive in Europe
as refugees. The .great majority
of these will be Jews. This evi-
dence makes tragically clear
that Nasser, an apt student of
Adolf Hitler, has not abandoned
his program of ruthless oppres-
sion."

travention of the Geneva Con-
vention of 1949, of which Egypt
is a signatory, as well as of the
Universal Declaration of Human
Rights adopted in 1948 by the
UN General Assembly, "The
Black Record" deplores the fail-
ure of the UN to take any pub-
lic action with respect to Egyp-
tian Jewry.
The AJ Congress study also
expressed disappointment at the
failure of the American Govern-
ment, both in and out of the
United Nations, to press vigor-
ously for action that would end
the perse-c
. ution of Jews in
Egypt.
Pointing out that the Amer-
ican Jewish Congress sin'ce
early last December has ad-
dressed several appeals for
remedial measures to Presi-
dent Eisenhower, the Secre-
tary of State and Ambassador
Henry Cabot Lodge, Dr. Prinz
re-stated a three-point pro-
gram which calls for "imme-
diate action" by the United .
States Government:
"1. The President of the
United States should remind the
government of Egypt directly Of
its obligation as a member of
the United Nations and of the
civilized community to abandon -
its present course of inhuman
oppression of-its Jewish popula-
tion .
.
"2. The U.S. delegation to the
United Nations should take the
lead in the General Assembly in
calling for action consistent
with the Charter of the United
Nations . .
"3. The Government of the
United States should extend this
country's tradition of sanctuary
and haven to the Egyptian refu-
gees."

N.Y. Jewish Groups
Denounce Sanctions

Strong opposition to sanctions
against Israel were voiced in
addresses and resolutions at
Zionist and other Jewish meet-
ings in New York this. week.
"One-sided and short-sighted
policies of the U.S. Government
in respect to Israel" were de-
ounced by the national execu-
tive council of the Zionist Or-
ganization of America, at a
meeting - in the Waldorf-Astoria
Hotel.
The Zionist leaders branded
as "iriamoral" attempts to im-
pose sanctions on Israel. A
resolution affirmed that Israel
is standing "firm in. legitimate
insistence on adequate guaran-
tees against further Egyptian
blockades and . belligerency."
At the meeting, Dr. Emmanuel
Neumann, Zionist organization
president, declared that "im•-•
position of sanctions on Israel
would remove the last vestige
of confidence in the UN as an
instrument of international jus-
tice:"
At a Vnai Brith administra-
tive committee luncheon in the
Sheraton-Astor Hotel, Sen. Jacob
J. Javits said the U.S. should
invite other maritime powers to
join her in declaring Aqaba
Gulf waters free to international
shipping and should help estab-
lish UN civil administration in
the Gaza Strip.
A National Committee for
Labor Israel conference adopted
a resolution charging President
Eisenhower with "starting from
false premises and arriving at
impossible solutions" to Middle
East problems.

Chief Rabbi of Ireland
Praises American Jewry
Tribute to the "overwhelming
bulk of American Jews" for
their support of Israel in the
present crisis was voiced by Dr.
Immanuel Jakobovits, the Chief
Rabbi of Ireland, at a lunch-
eon given in his honor by the
World Jewish Congress in New
York, Feb. 14. This "decided
sympathy" with Israel, Rabbi
Jakobovits commented, reflect-
ed the "security and independ-
ence" of American Jewry.

The American Jewish Con-
gress has renewed its appeal to
President Eisenhower to inter-
vene with the Nasser regime to
halt the Egyptian government's
policy • of oppression aimed
against its Jewish population.
The AJ Congress further
called upon the U. S. delegation
to the United Nations to "take
the lead in the General Assem-
bly" in pressing for action
against Egypt's violations of fun-
damental human righti and
urged the U.S. Government to
offer haven to Jewish expellees
from Egypt.
Action was advocated in a re-
port just published by the Con-
gress, entitled "The Black Rec-
ord: Nasser's Persecution of
Egyptian Jewry." The 48-page
survey — the first documented
and comprehensive account of
the tragedy that has engulfed
the Egyptian Jewish community
—was issued Feb. 16 at the
opening of a two-day Confer-
ence on International Affairs,
held at the Stephen Wise Con-
gress House, New York.
Dr. Joachim Prinz of New-
ark, N.J., chairman of Con-
gress' Commission on Inter-
national Affairs and on Israel,
presented the report to the
meeting. He cited up-to-date
evidence that the anti-Jewish
campaign is continuing, and
warned that "unless the free
world acts decisively and im-
mediately, the Jewish commu-
nity of Egypt is doomed."
"The Black Record" charges
Egypt with carrying out a well-
planned and systematic program
based on Hitler's pattern, aimed
at the "spoilation and destruc-
tion of the ancient Jewish com-
munity of Egypt."
The anti-Jewish program of
the Nasser regime, the document
asserts, "is a deliberate and
long-planned policy."
The contention of Egyptian
government spokesmen that the

rected solely against "Zionist
agents" is dismissed by "The
