Reparations

(Direct JTA Teletype

TEL AVIV—Friendship and
support of Israel is becoming
an integral part of French poli-
tical life regardless of party,
Shimon Peres, director-general
of the Israel Defense Ministry,
told the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency Tuesday on his return
from France.
Mr. Peres was made an officer
of the Legion of Honor in Paris
in recognition of his activities
in fostering Israeli-French
friendship.
He reported a "significant de-
velopment" in European think-
ing as a unit which had been
intensified during and since the
British - French action against
Egypt.
The Israeli official said that
the major European powers, in-
cluding France, Britain and
West Germany, realize the "im-
possibility of maintaining an
effective influence in world
affairs while each acts inde-
pendently."
•He said Israel had hopes
that in the deyelopment of a
unified European policy, a
"friendly attitude" 'toward Is-
rael would develop naturally,
particularly in view of the hos-
tility of the Afro-Asian bloc
nations toward European nations
and Israel alike.

WASHINGTON, (JTA) —
German Chancellor Konrad
Adenauer has firmly rejected
a move to stop reparations
shipments to Israel. The
mope emerged as part of the
pressure campaign to force
Israel withdrawal from Egyp-
tian territory.
It was learned from author-
itative diplomatic sources
here that a suggestion was
made to the West German
Government to consider the
reparations matter in the
light of the United Nations
demand for Israel withdraw-
al. But Dr. Adenauer report-
edly ruled that Germany was
committed to continue ship-
ments and would not use rep-
arationi for political pres-

sure.

Oil was reached in the two

oil experts said the new wells
proved that the oil field was
greater than previous estimates
had indicated.
Six more wells are now being

Jews With Campaign
for Synagogue Fund

LAWRENCE, Kan;
The .35 Jewish•families of Lawr-
ence learned that a quiet cam-
paign has been organized by a
group of Christians, to raise
funds for remodeling the JeW-
ish Community Center into a
synagogue. A slightly flabber-
gasted president of the center,
Herman Cohen, said "we did
not know about it."
L. 0. Ringler, leader of the
Christian group, said the proj-
ect • was started because the
Jewish families, and 80 Jewish
students at the University of
Kansas, are_ the only religious
group in Lawrence without a
place to worship. The nearest
synagogue is in Kansas City.
