Oak Park Assured Its First
Jewish Councilman in April
By the Oak-Woodser
The city of Oak Park is as-
sured its first Jewish Council-
man by April 1 (No fooling!).
This was an established fact
after Monday's primary ballot-
ing placed three Jews in con-
tention for the t w o Council
openings in the April 1 general
election.
David H. Shepherd, with a
total of 1,246 votes, led the nine
candidates, with incumbent
Councilman Joseph M. • Suiter
placing second with 1,114.
The other two Jewish resi-
dents nominated for Council
were Sam Hammerstein, with
806 votes, and Mrs. Harriet
Arnowitz, with '764. Unseated
in the voting was incumbent
Elmer W. Barry with 504
votes.

Other unsuccessful candidates
were Ralph Pierce, 430; James
P. McEvoy, 427; Julius M. Gross-
bart, 310; and Benjamin Davis,
165.
In the only other Oak Park
contest, Burton R. Shifman re-
ceived 670 votes, to place sec-
ond behind incumbent Frank C.
Glabach, who received 758 votes,
and thus win a place on the
April ballot.
Both Shifman and Glabach
ran well ahead of the other can-
didates. The closest was Milton
T; Gold with 428 votes; Walter
S. Nussbaum, 313; Isadore Gold-
baum, 311; William E. Wilson,
268; Harold E. Liethauser, „187;
and Albert A. Miller, 180. ,..
Voting was light, despite an
active campaign by many of
the candidates. Earlier it was
thought that the large number
of people running for each of-
fice would attract a considerable
number of voters to the polls.
However, according to
Louise- Shaw, Oak Park City
Clerk, only 3,159 out of the
16,124 registered voters went
to the polls—approximately
'20 percent.
This may be contrasted to the
November Presidential election
when a record 85 percent of the
voters cast ballots.

YOU REAP THE BENEFIT
Nowadays, manufacturing plants don't have to put
up with the expense and inefficiency of keeping ,
large inventories of materials and parts on hand.
Trucks and truck-trailers, by providing swift,
direct, door-to-door transportation service, have
made such costly procedure a thing of the past.
The .modern assembly line extends, in effect,
beyond the manufacturing plant itself to the
commercial motor vehicles which continuously
supply industry with 'round-the-clock shipments
of materials and parts.
Yes, trucks and truck-trailers are indeed as-
sembly lines on wheels, serving industry in a
way that brings an ever-improving standard of
living to all the people.
