Only 7 Days of Brotherhood soy
Can Still Make One Weak
By the Oak-Woodser
On Sunday, it will be official!
Brotherhood Week will be here,
and we can concentrate on de-
voting a week to special pro-
grams and overt efforts to be
nice to our neighbors who hap-
pen to be of a different faith
or creed or color than our-
selves.
During the week we put aside
to remind us of "the Brother-
hood of man under the Father-
hood of God," we will make
conscious efforts—at least some
of us will—to treat our associ-
ates with tolerance.
But is one week, even if
repeated year after year,
enough to get us to change
our habits and our ways of
thinking? Or when Brother,
hood Week ends on Feb. 24
will we lapse back into the
ways of the prejudiced?
As Jews who know the mean-
ing of prejudice and bigotry, we
will probably set an example for
our children during the year to
come by speaking derisively of
the "d u m b schwartze" who
cleans our house, or the "ill-
mannered Pollak" who is not
even good as a garbage collec-
tor or the Catholic family whose
eight brats trample the lawns
and bully the other kids.
At the same time we will be
wondering why in this day of
enlightenment there are people
who have no use for the Jew,
who charge him alternately
with being responsible for com-
munism and fascism, who call
him "an international banker,"
who say he is a "Christ killer."
For a true picture of Brother-
hood in action, we need only
look at young children together
at play. Their minds are filled
with ideas on what to play and
how to play it. They don't con-
sider with whom to play.
Little children have their share
of problems in growing up.
There are plenty of fights and
a great many more arguments.
They may call names, but they
are not the names of prejudice.
When they go home from play,
however, and tell the mother
or father of • the troubles they
have had with Johnnie, and the
parent calls Johnnie "that Jew"
or "that Catholic" or "t h a t
nigger" then little wheels start
turning and quick little minds

start registering the first seeds
of hate.
If there is a person with no
dislikes of things or of indivi-
duals, we have yet to meet him.
It's normal to acquire pets and
peeves, but when we put the
label of hate on the mass be-
cause of the individual both
our logic and our sense of fair-
ness is distorted.
Yet, that's all prejudice is:
the hate of many because of
one or a few, or the fear of the
unknown because of hearsay.
They're dangerous policies for
the ultimate peace of the world.
All this is not meant to
belittle Brotherhood W e e k,
which is a logical approach—
and a necessary one—in the
direction of understanding.
But unless we work—and
work consciously, if necessary—
for total understanding 52
weeks of the year, we have suc-
ceeded only in making one week
a little more bearable.

Runs for Council
The race— for two Oak Park
elective positions closes this
week with candidates for City
Council and Justice of the Peace
winding up an exciting few
weeks of campaigning. Balloting
will take place on Monday for
the Primary, and the general
election will follow in April.
One of the candidates for
Council is a familiar face in the
Jewish Community. He is Sam
Hammerstein, who, with his
brother Sol, operated a drug
store for 25 years on Linwood
and Tyler.
Hammerstein says that after
selling the store, he traveled
throughout the country looking
for a place to settle, "but we
couldn't find anything as satis-
fying as right in our own back
yard—Oak Park."
. Sam Hammerstein and his
wife, Mae, have both been active
in a variety of affairs. They
have a daughter, Janice Gail,
who works for the Oak Park
Jewish Center, and another,
Rhoda Ellen, who is an honor
student - at Oak Park High
School.
Active in a variety of philan-
thropic and communal organiza-
tions, Hammerstein numbers
among his affiliations the Louis
Stone Lodge of Bnai.Brith and
the Detroit Retail Druggists' As-
sociation,
Born in New York, he moved
to Detroit in 1915 with his fam-
ily, attended Detroit schools. He
passed the state pharmacy board
examinations when he was 19.
Hammerstein has been an Oak
Park resident since 1953.
