SOC Hadassah Plans `Go West'

The Suburban Community

Suburban Parents Group
Begins Hebrew Day School

By the 'Oak-Woodser
For more than two years, a
group of parents in the subur-
ban and extreme northwest
areas of Detroit have been ex-
changing ideas and talking over
plans for establishing an all-day
Hebrew school for their chil-
dren.
This week, after many months
of intensive planning, the par-
ents group announced that is
has formally created the He-
brew Community Day School.
It is an institute which is
"intended t o provide Jewish
children living in the outlying
areas of Detroit with facilities
for. a maximum JeWish educa-
tion while pursuing their reg-
ular English and secular
studies."
According to a spokesman
for the group, the school aims
at transmitting to children
"the traditional Jewish • values
so vitally necessary for a posi-
t i v e r e ligious orientation
which at the same time is in-
tegrated in other American
cultural patterns."
In its formation, the school
received guidance from Torah
Umesorah, national organiza-
tion for the establishment of
day schools.
According to a decision reach-
ed by . the curriculum and pol-
icy-making committees of the
parents group, the school will
offer a program of Hebrew
studies to be conducted entirely
in the modern Hebrew tongue.
The parents feel that by
maximum use of time spent in
the school, the need'for a child's
attendance at afternoon, early
evening or Sunday morning
classes to receive religious in-
struction.. will be eliminated.
Classes during only regular
school hours thus result not
only in a more intensive ground-
ing in Hebrew and other Jew-
ish subjects, but the child is
free, after school hours, to pur-
sue other cultural or recrea-
tional projects.
According to the s c h o o l's
spokesman, students will b e
chosen selectively, according to
aptitude and other testing tech-
niques:-... Certification b y the

such features ,as a peep show, a
cafeteria-style supper conces-

A mardi gras atmosphere will
prevail with clowns and pretty
