Israeli Capers Topple Yeshiva U.
to Play in Detroit Next Thursday
News that Israel's Olympic
Basketball squad won its first
victory on a tour of the United
States has skyrocketed ticket
sales for the team's appear-
ance in Detroit this coming
Thursday, in the University of
Detroit Field House.
The triumph was a close 61-
59 squeeze over • a powerful
Yeshiva University team, and
was witnessed by a capacity
crowd of 15,000 persons in
Madison Square Gardens.
Starting ticket sales rolling
for the tilt between the Israeli
cagers and the Michigan Colle-
giate All-Stars, a team com-
prised of leading basketball
players from several Michigan

man team, under coach Elmer
Ripley, of Notre Dame. Here

old, a member of the Israel
Tank Corps.
Marcel Hefetz, 6-2, 26, mem-
ber of the Israel Army.

released from army service.

Egyptian Jew.

Stars, coached by Bob Calihan,
basketball coach at U. of D.,

Dame; Ralph Goldstein and
Sam Taub, U. of D.; Walt God-
frey, Michigan State, Werner
Killen, LIT; Duane Peterson,
MSU; Mac Supronowicz, Uni-
versity of Michigan; Norm
Swanson, U. of D.; and Har-
vey Williams, U. of M.
Assisting Calihan with the
coaching are Forddy Anderson,
Michigan State; Joel Mason,
Wayne State; and Bill Perigo,
University of Michigan. The
game will begin at 8:15 p. m.
A plus attraction` will be a
preliminary game, at 7:30 p.m.,
between members of the De-
troit Lions basketball squad vs.
a team comprised- of Major
League baseball players, mostly
from the Tigers.
The Lions will field Charlie
Ane, Dome -Dibble, Jerry Rei-
chow, Sonny Gandee, Jug •Gir-
ard, 011ie Spencer, Gene G-ed-
man, .Stan Campbell and Lou
Creekmur.
Sure starters for the Major
Leaguers are Steve • Gromek,
Don Lund, Reno Bettoia and
Cass Michaels. Others will be
filled in by game time. .
The Hearst Newspaper Syn-
dicate (represented he_re by The
Detroit Times) and the U. S,
Committee for Sports in Israel
are jointly sponsoring t h e
American tour of the Israeli
Olympic squad.
The team did not compete at
Melbourne because of the -fight-
ing in the Sinai Peninsula at
the time. The Hearst papers
are paying all expenses of the
team, both traveling to' and
from Israel, and during their
stay • here.
Before coming to Detroit, the
Israelis will play Brandeis Uni-
versity in Boston and have an-
other - game scheduled in Balti-
more. They also will play in
San Francisco and Los Angeles
before returning to Israel.
A- half-time exhibition for
the game here will be put on
by the University of Michigan's
Big -Ten champion gymnastic
squad.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Nearly
1,600 immigrants arrived in Is-
rael in one day aboard three
vessels, the S.S. Jerusalem, S.S.
Zion and S.S. Phillipo Grimani.
Among , the arrivals were some
200 Egyptian Jews and many
Hungarian Jewish refugees.
