Cantor Tribute to Launch
$75,000,000 Bond Drive
Friday, February 1, 1957 -- THE DETROIT
---
.....
A contrast in the times is provided by comedian Eddie
Cantor and his wife, Ida, who are pictured on the right as they
prepared to depart on their honeymoon to Europe over 40
years ago. At the left, the famous couple is shown prior to
a trip to Israel in 1950. It is for his untiring efforts for Israel
that communities throughout the nation will join the Israel
Bond Drive in marking Cantor's 65th birthday.
*
Former President Harry S.
Truman will be the principal
speaker at the 1957 Inaugural
Conference for Israel Bonds, to
be held at the Fontainebleau
Hotel in Miami Beach, Feb. 15
to 17, it is . announced by Abra-
ham Feinberg, president of the
Israel Bond Organization.
Truman will speak at the
main session on Feb. 16, which
will take the form of a national
celebration of the 65th birthday
of Eddie Cantor, noted enter-
tainer who has distinguished
Truman
Miss Winters
himself in humanitarian en-
deavors and in work for the
State of Israel.
The Cantor tribute and the
conference will launch an in-
tensive nation-wide campaign
to sell a minimum of $75,000,000
in Israel Bonds during the year,
with the first $20,000,000 to be
raised by the end of February.
Approximately 2,000 business,
civic, communal and religious
leaders are expected to attend
the Cantor birthday dinner in
Miami Beach, which, in addi-
tion to Truman, will have the
participation of many outstand-
ing personalities prominent on
the American and Israeli scenes.
Among them will be Dr. Ab-
ba Hillel Silver, chairman of
the board of governors of the
bond drive; Feinberg, and Dr.
Joseph J. Schwartz, Israel Bond
vice-president.
Key cities throughout the
United States will hold simul-
taneous Eddie Cantor birthday
celebrations, and will be linked
with the national birthday party
in Miami Beach via a closed-
circuit television hook-up. De-
troit, "however, is not one of
these communities.
Another highlight of the con-
ference will be the National
Sponsors Salute Luncheon on
Feb. 15 for women delegates.
Mrs. Cantor will be the key
speaker at this session. Fea-
tured with Mrs. Cantor will be
her daughters, Janet and Mari-
lyn, and Shelley Winters,
Broadway, Hollywood and tele-
vision star.
Lawrence G, Laskey of Bos-
ton, New England regional
chairman for Israel Bonds, is
chairman of the inaugural con-
ference committee, and Mrs.
Eleanor Roosevelt is honorary
chairman. Jack Benny is serv-
ing as chairman of the'program
committee for the Eddie Cantor
celebration.
The three-day Miami Beach
Conference will serve as the
springboard for an intensified
campaign to increase the pace
of Israel Bond sales throughout
the country.
Feinstein listed four "impor-
tant" reasons for Israel Bond
investment at this particular
time:
1. Other key sources of econo-
mic aid have been cut off in
recent months;
2. Bond funds must be made
available to house new imtiti-
grants from Egypt and the
Russian Satellite nations to
avoid reverting to tent cities;
3. To provide jobs for new-
comers; and
4. TO help Israel solve oil and
electric power shortages, which,
to date, have resulted in unem-
ployment of 30,000 because of a
slowdown in industry.
Community Council Praises
Efforts of McNamara, Potter
The Jewish Community Coun-
cil commended Senators Mc-
Namara and Potter for their
support of efforts to revise the
Cloture Rule in the United
States Senate, which allows un-
limited debate.
Samuel J. Rhodes, Council
president, said that the efforts
of the Michigan Senators and
others to put into "actual prat-.
tice those procedures which
will serve the advancement of
democracy," would be greeted
warmly by all Americans.
Formation of a group to be
known as the Detroit Landsman
shaften Committee for Israel
Bonds was announced this week,
following a conference last Sun-
day of presidents and leaders in
the local Landsmanshaften
movement.
Jack B. Ormond, of the .Odes-
sa Society, was named chairman.
He will be as-
sisted by Max'

The assembly was called in
response to a coast-to-coast
closed circuit telephone hook-up
last week, in which Mrs. Golda
Meii, Israel Foreign Minister,
and Ambassador Abba S. Eban
explained the urgent need for
funds.
The Bond Drive has establish-
ed a $75,000,000 goal for the
current year's campaign. It is
exactly this sum that Israel was
to receive from the World Bank.
Grants-in-aid from the U. S.
Government also have been su-
spended.

was organized on the basis of a
proposal submitted by Isidore
