Histadrut Sets New Goal to Assist Israel Newcomers Funds contributed to be re- ceived this week by the Detroit Histadrut .Campaign in honor. of Harry Schumer, whose 60th birthday • was celebrated at a. testimonial supper last Thurs- day. Members of all divisions of the campaign have been asked to complete all assignments and to bring ag much cash as pos- sible to a worker's rally sched- tiled for this Thursday evening, at the Labor Zionist Institute. Campaign • workers r will be aiming at a new goal, as outlined by Isaac Hamlin, at the Schiiiner testimonial. At this program, the former national executive Secretary of the National Committee for Labor ISrael called for every in- Creased effort in campaigning because of the tremendous new w a v e of Israel confronting Israel during 1957. He said a great part of the responsibility for aiding over 80,000 newcomers •to Israel in 1957 will be assumed. by Hista- drut. He said the immigrants will come at the rate of 6,500 a \month, both from Egypt and Hungary. Another Unreported highlight of the testimonial was a presen- tation by Monroe Lake, execu- tive secretary of • the Detitoit Linen Men's Association, of which Schumer is president. The citation, made in the name of the city of Detroit, was signed by Acting Mayor. Louis Miriani. It cited Schumer for his "civic devotion - to both Jew- ish and non-Jewish causes." Many organization brought in large sums in honor of Schumer. Heading the list was the Heb- rew Benevolent Society with .a large treasury gift plus contri- butions by individual board members. Detroit Edison Wins GE Forum Award The Detroit Edison Company has been presented a "certi- ficate of recognition" for its role in General Electric's "More poWer to America" productivity forums. E. 0. George, vice-pres- ident of sales, received the cer- tificate on behalf of Detroit Edison. The announcement was made by C. M. Dunn, GE district man- ager-user industries sales, who said Detroit,, Edison has made outstanding contributions i n stimulating broader, more effi- cient use of electric power in American industry and raising American standards of living through - sponsorship of the forums. - The forums are a continuing series co-sponsored by General Electric and the nation's utility .7 - companies as part of the "More Power to America" program.
