JERUSALEM (JTA)—Lessing Rosenwald praised Israel and the accomplishments of its people after completing a week's tour of the country, but insisted that he was still opposed to Zionism. Rosenwald s t r e s s e d that the anti-Zionist Council for Judaism, ' of which he is a former president, is not anti- Israel. During his visit as a guest of the Government of Israel, Mr. Rosenwald conferred with Pre- mier David Ben - Gurion, who had extended the invitation to visit Israel. He - travelled the length and breadth of Israel and even visited Sharm el Sheikk, on the top of the Sinai Peninsula. Rosenwald reiterated his long- held view that the "Jews are not a people" and asserted that "we in America resent Zionist propaganda and lobbying ac- tivities." During questioning by newsmen, Rosenwald admitted that the fact that Israel existed was good for the Jews seeking to migrate as well as for Egyp- tian and Hungarian Jews who needed a haven. The American met with Is- rael Chief Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog and during his visit talked with many Israelis. People who met him during the tour commented on his breadth of knowledge of the historical and Biblical aspects of the country and on the fact that he emph'asized that while he was a guest of the government he paid all his own expenses. TOP ATTRACTION IN AUTO SHOW AT FORD EXHIBIT 417641=52wr „,- Admiring visitors applaud first mass-produced retractable hardtop—biggest body change since 1915 By ERNEST W. WHITNEY There's so much that's so new at this 44th Annual Detroit Auto- mobile Show that a visitor feels somewhat like a small boy on Christmas morning: he hardly knows where to begin. As far as we are concerned, the most fascinating automobile in the entire Armory is Ford's Retract- able Hardtop. Here, right before your very eyes, you watch a trim all-steel hardtop change itself into a glamorous convertible—and back again. Even after you've watched this startling transformation, you still feel like the applauding visitor from Kalamazoo who said, "I've seen her do it twice, all right. But I still can't believe it." Watch the crowds gather around EnnommizEm pismago zzattaugzsmisems •• :.- . -. . Quick Change Wizardry - For years all of us have heard much about "hardtop convert- ibles." But these cars haven't really been convertible at all. It remained for Ford, the company that sparked the trend to V-8 engines and puf America on wheels with its mass production tech- niques, to come up with the first hardtop that is tru/y,convertible. When you feast your admiring glance on this retractable hardtop, you'll be looking at the surest-to- be-copied idea in car bodies since Ford introduced the first 2-door sedan back in 1915. In one glam- orous model this Ford brings you all the snug protection of a hardtop and the sun-loving fun of a con- vertible. In our opinion it's the "poppy" of a whole future genera- tion of cars. The way this car converts is simplicity itself. All you do is touch a switch. Smoothly, electric motors lift the rear deck lid. You can stop here if you wish, load your baggage, then push the button and close the lid. If yo-U continue to touch the switch, the top separates from the body—then raises and slips gracefully out of - sight. Finally the trunk lid closes, leaving a smooth expanse of metal right up to the back of the rear seat. You've never seen anything like it because there's never been anything like it. One admiring visitor quipped, "It's the slickest quick-change act I've seen since they invented lipstick!" This provides extra rear deck space for the roof which is "swallowed" by the trunk. To get more luggage space, the spare tire has been moved under a floor plate in the trunk and the gas tank is farther forward. Production of these unusual two- in-one Fords is expected to get under way soon. Best Show Yet , Another highlight of this year's show is the unique cutaway side view of the new "Inner Ford." In fact, this entire '57 show is the most educational and entertaining we can remember. But the star of the show is Ford's retractable hardtop. Once you see it you'll say, !'There's the Ford in my future!" Be among the first to see this beautiful all-steel hardtop that's an exciting convertible, too! At the touch of a switch, and in a matter of seconds, the steel top disappears! This fabulous retract- able hardtop was developed by Ford . . . leader in hardtop styling and world's leading maker of Meet the newest NEW KIND of convertibles. It's another example of how the important, trend-making features come to you first from Ford. This exclusive new dream car will actually be on the American Road very soon.
