Since the proclamation by
the Jewish National Fund of
January as JNF Month, nearly
every synagogue and all schools
have undertaken to conduct ap-
peals for the planting of trees,
the placement of JNF Blue-
White Boxes, inscriptions in the
Golden Book, in the Bar Mitz-
vah Book, the Sefer Hayeled
and other traditional aids to
land reclamation in Israel.
Special attention is being paid
by the schools and synagogues
to tree planting since Hamisha
Asar or Tu b'Shvat comes this
year on Jan. 17. Tu b'Shvat,
also known as Arbor Day in Is-
rael or the New Year of the
Trees, which began as a,4Pales-
tinian holiday, is celebrated by
Jews all over the world, sym-
bolizing the love of the Jew,ish
people for the Holy land. It has
helped keep alive the feeling
for trees and plants.
In the synagogues, appeals
will be made for the planting
of trees, on Saturday, Jan. 19,
which has been designated as
JNF Sabbath.
The schools have this year
undertaken to expand consider-
ably their annual Tu b'Shvat ef-
forts. School buildings and
classrooms have been appropri-

ately decorated to create an Is-
rael and tree planting atmos-
phere, and to convey the spirit
of Hamisha Asar.
Many organizations are plan-
ning JNF and Tu b'Shvat pro-
grams and have asked the JNF
office to provide programs such
as speakers and films for these
meetings. Most of the programs
will emphasize trees as a secur-
ity measure to be planted along
Israel's northern area around
the city of Safed, overlooking
the Lebanese and Syrian bor-
ders.
The Landsmanshaften of De-
troit are conducting their own
Landsmanshaften Month for
JNF in January. Their objective
is to have each member plant at
least one tree in Israel during
JNF Month.
Trees can be planted by call-
ing the JNF office, UN. 4-2767.
Certificates will be issued in the
names of the persons in whose
honor, or memory, trees have
been planted.
