50 years.
Born in Kawkawlin, Mich.,
January 13, 1897, Carl moved
with his family to Reese, Mich.,
in 1903, before settling in De-
troit in 1907.
Three generations of Schillers,
the grandparents, Simon and
Rasha Schiller, parents Joseph
and Anna Schiller, and Carl and
his brothers and sisters joined
Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
where they have been members
for 50 years. Carl was the first
Hebrew student of Joseph Hag-
gai who still teaches in the
United Hebrew Schools.
Carl attended the Bishop
School, McKinstry and Western
High, then graduated from the
old Central High School in 1914.
He attended the Detroit College
of Law, then enlisted in the
United. States Marine Corps and
fought overseas with the 13th
Regiment Marines under Gen-
eral Smedley Butler during
World War I.
He was active at the Hannah
Schloss Center, a member of
Tri-Square Club and Washing-
ton Club.
Upon his return from over-
seas, he married Rose Krause in
1920 and joined his father's busi-
ness, the Schiller Sales Com-
pany, a wholesale candy busi-
ness at the foot of Woodward
Avenue.
After 20 years in the automo-
bile business, he went into the
construction business to set up
a partnership with his son, Don,
who had just returned from
service . overseas in World War
