MIAMI, (JTA) — In an un-
precedented reversal after wide-
spread Jewish communal oppo-
sition, the Dade County School
Board cancelled plans to intro-
duce a county-wide religious
instruction program in the pub-
lic school system, the Jewish
Floridian reports.
The plan had been sponsored
by the state superintendent of
schools, Thomas T. Bailey, who
launched a personal campaign
last year to inculcate public
school students "with spiritual
and moral values as derived
from religion." Asserting then
that the public school curricu-
lum was "Godlesst" Supt. Bailey
proposed a comprehensive pro-
gram to have teachers give stu-
dents instruction in 'religion.
The Dade County board in
November approved adoption of
the Bailey plan to start imme-
diately on a "test basis" in 26
schools throughout the county.
A joint advisory committee on
religion in the schools, with
Rabbi Joseph Narot, of Temple
Israel as chairman, mobilized
opposition to the plan. Member
organizations included rabbini-
cal, secular and women's Jew-
ish groups. The Floridian re-
ports that, despite the reversal,
parts of the plan will. be intro-
duced into 15 schools through-
out Florida on a "test" basis.

What of Tomorrow?
There is a tendency to dis-
cuss the. Middle East problem
as apart from the Israel-Egypt
issue. . . . This attitude pre-
vails primarily among the so-
called big statesmen of big
powers. . . . But along comes
Ray Alan, who, in a splendid
article in The Reporter, points
out that the present policy of
our State Department, unless
reversed, will lead to the de-
struction of Israel . . . Alan
quotes a Lebanese Christian of-
ficial as follows: "There's no
denying it — Nasser is a mas-
ter . . . There he sits like a
sphinx, beside the Nile, smiling
now to the Russians, now to
the Americans though never too
long at either, and he has the
whole world waiting on hilt.. . .
A superb performance! He'll
keep the canal and get the UN
to foot the bill for repairing the
damage his sabotage has caused
and receive an American loan
to keep his economy afloat
while he rebuilds his armed
forces. . . The Americans have
no alternative. . . . First, there's
his Russian connection with
which he can always scare dol-
lars out of Washington. . . . And
secondly, there's Aramco, the
perfect hostage . . One word
from Nasser, and, whatever
King Saud may say, the Jor-
danians will blow up their sec-
tor of the pipeline. . . . I im-
agine that both Aramco and
King Saud have reminded the
State Department of the fact."
The Israeli triumph at Sinai
abruptly changed this picture
. • . For there can be no ques-
tion that Col. Nasser lost face.
. .. The Arab League leadership
could not but realize that there
was a rather wide discrepancy
between the arrogant boasting
of Nasser's invincibility and the
quick waterloo he received at
the hands of the Israeli army
And don't think for a mo-
ment that Jordan, Lebanon,
Libya, the Sudan and Yemen
failed to understand that Nas-
ser's army was no match for
the Israelis . . . Nobody took
seriously Nasser's statement
that "it was the British who
actually captured Gaza and then
handed the town over to the
Israelis five hours later."
Now President Nasser is once
more firmly in the saddle,
ready, eager and able to take
up again the game of 'playing
the west against the East and
preparing a campaign against
Israel.
COPENHAGEN (JTA)—The
Danish government has initiated
talks with other Scandinavian
governments to move jointly in
the United Nations for an in-
quiry on the treatment of Jews
and others in Egypt, it was re-
vealed in Parliament.

Christian Fen announced that,
several weeks ago, the govern-
ment had discussed Egyptian
action agairist the Jews and had
ordered its delegation at the
UN to examine the matter.

other Scandinavian delegations
and with UN Secretary-General
Hammarskjold, Mr. Fen said,

was striving for the stars,
But groveling in the dust;
Life was but a. mocking farce,
A dream I shouldn't have trust.
"We live and we suffer and die,
Is this the condign we deserved?
The beast in the field does the
very same thing,
But we who never swerved—.
What of us?"
The oracle stridently shrieked:
"You, too, like the beast have
the very same end—
It was an illusion—you fool!"
