Recurring Attacks Stir Israel; Welcomes 1,000 Hungarian Jews (Continued from Page 1) East is between the force of freedom and the force of totalitarianism," he declared. He asked whether Israel can rely on American sup- port in the event Israel's enemies continue their pressure. Warning that there is every possibility of renewed hostilities, Dr. Neumann asked. whether Israel can defi- nitely rely on future American support in the event of continued hostile pressures, or, must shz.. rely on her own strength? He pointed out that there were no such warnings concerning Israel's security as in the case of grave concern expressed by our Government in attempted aggressions against Baghdad Pact nations. U.S. Cool to Buffer Zone Plan WASHINGTON.-Golda Meir, Israel Foreign Minis- ter, conferred last week with Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. She discussed with him the current situa- tion and inquired into the question of the possible re- sumption of the now dormant U. S. economic aid pro- gram in Israel. State Department sources displayed considerable coolness toward proposals for a United Nations buffer zone between Israel and Egypt unless Israel allowed a portion of its territory to be included in the internation- alized zone. Suggestions that territory in the Sinai Peninsula captured by Israel be internationalized, were not well received by the American officials. The State Department was said to feel that the Sinai Peninsula is a sovereign part of Egypt and that the United States could not favor a plan to create a buffer zone out of Egyptian territory unless adjoining Israeli territory were similarly used. Israel, meanwhile, is deeply stirred over the recur- rence Of Arab, fedayeen attacks. Among the latest occur- rences was the blowing up of a water pipe under a bridge on the Tel Aviv highway. Pierre Montel, chairman of the French National As- sembly's defense committee, stated in Jerusalem that Israel could purchase French Mystere - 4 - B jet planes which are superior to the Mystere-4 fighters Israel hither- to has bought from France. 'JTA reports from Ter. Aviv that the Jewish Agency has denied a New York Times report that only 900 of 14,000 Jewish refugees who fled from Hungary to 'Austria in the last two months are willing to settle in Israel. "More than 1,000 Hungarian Jews have already arrived in Israel, and the Jewish Agency is planning now to char- ter ships for the transfer of an additional 1,000 refugees who have already been approved in Vienna for emigra- tion to Israel," Shlomo Zalman Shragai, head of the Agen- cy's immigration department, stated. He -expressed the belief that half of all the Hungarian Jewish refugees in Veinna will proceed to Israel. The Jewish Agency also- received reports that more than 2,000 Jews left Egypt since the start of the latest anti-Jewish persecutions there. A large majority of the refugees will migrate to Israel. Of 148 Jews who arrived in Athens from Egypt last week, almost all will go on to this country. - `Music of Israel' to Be Featured by ZOD Wed. as Music Month Event "Music of Israel" will be presented at a general meet- i n g of the Zionist Organi- zation o f De- tr oit, next Wednesday, 8:30 p. in in the social hall of Beth Aaron Synagogue, 1 8 0 0 0 Wy- oming, Rabbi Milt on Arm, ZOD program chairman, an- nounces. Israel Forms Base at Aqaba Menahem Beigin, Herut Delegation to Visit Detroit A delegation of Herut party members in Israel's Knesset will make Detroit a major stop on their itinerary in this coun- try, when they visit here early in February. The delegation will be head- ed by Menachem Beigin, leader of the militant party which opposes Ben- Gurion's Mapai Party in the parliament. Beigin, corn : inander of the former Irgun - Zv ai • Leumi, the under- ground move- ment which Bergin aided the liber- ation of Israel, will be accom- . port of Elath. The frigate Miz- nak, which arrived at Elath, has enough gunpower to outshoot any possible gun positions that Egypt might try to reestablish at the southernmost tip of the Sinai Peninsula overlooking the waterway from the Red Sea to Elath. The arrival of the Miznak, which made a 42-day journey fio Elath from Haifa, by way of the Cape of Good Hope, is be- ing hailed by the Israeli press as a major factor complement- ing the Sinai campaign. The press consensus is that opening of the new naval base, giving Israel a two - sea Navy -- with Haifa on the Mediterranean, and Elath in the South is an front. Stationed at Elath, the Miz- nak's guns commanded the site of former Egyptian batteries at Sharm el Sheikh, which kept Israel's shipping from using the Gulf of'Aqaba. Now, should the Egyptians try to rebuild the Sharm el Sheikh batteries, after Israel has completed troop with- drawals, the Miznak's gunpower should still keep the gulf open, most of the newspapers here point out. E. ALBERT PALLOT, Miami attorney and civic leader, was named national chairman of Bnai Brith service eommittee for the armed forces and vet- erans.
