IIINT's Number One Trouble-Shooter at •Suez Is South African Jew By DAVID HOROWITZ UNITED NATION (AJP)— Significantly, whenever some- thing goes wrong with the in- tricate administrative global UN machinery, Dag Hammarskjold immediately summons to his 38th story suite one man who -is almOst certain to come for- ward with some remedy. That man -is a Jew of South African nationality — the dy- namic Col. Alfred G. Katzin who was the brains behind all the inter-office activity when the Secretary General began to "Streamline" the secretariat af- ter he took office in 1952. Last week hen something went wrong with Hamm 'ar- skjold's Suez ,-.1 earance program —.thanks to Nasser's unpredict- able behavior—Col. Kaczin was again summoned, and both he and administrative assistant An- drew Cordier were quickly sent off to Egypt to help Maj. E.L.M. Burns and Lt. Gen. Raymond A. Wheeler remove the latest Egytian stumbling blocks. How the vindictive Egyptians viewed Katzin, a Jew, is diffi- cult to tell. It is easy to guess, however—and here may be the reason why Cordier went along. At any rate, it is Col. Katzin who has been designated "Dep- uty-Under-Sceretary-in-Charge- of - Headquarters - Planning - for - Suez-Canal-Clearance"—possibly the longest title ever conferred upon a UN official. Col. Katzin was born in 1906 in Cape Town and educated in the Diecesan College, Rinde- bosch. As a colonel, he. served on active duty in East Africa, TRAVEL SERVICE proudly presents Conducted Air Tours of your choice of A winter 1 •111 tours Jan. 15-29 Feb. 12-26 Mar. 5-19 Mar. 26-Apr.9 sleeve Directly From Detroit with Guide and Group eSpecial Get-tegether Dinner and Cocktail Party Upon Arrival *Choice of Family Plan or 4ircoach Travel • All Meals Included-- Choice of Restaurants • Complete Sightsee. log in Mexico City and Environs *Luncheon in Private Mexican HOPS • Visit to Fabulous University City • Use of Private Can for Shopping • NightclubbingIO Mexico City • A Real Bull Fight • FiveDaysinAcapulco • All Deluxe Hotels Used Throughout Egypt, the Middle East, North Africa, Italy and the Balkans from 1940 to 1954.
