Northwest Young Israel
to Expand Facilities

A general membership meet-
ing has been called by Samuel
S. Novetsky, president of Young
Israel of Northwest Detroit, for
8:45 p.m., Saturday, in the
synagogue.
Plans will be discussed for
future expansion of the build-
ing and the congregation's an-
nual banquet. Israeli movies
and a social hour are planned.
The synagogue presently is
expanding its physical facilities,
planning to use an adjacent lot
to increase the main sanctuary,
social hall and educational
plant.
• Serving with Norman Sukenic,
chairman of the building com-
mittee, which has undertaken
the program, are Sam Belkin,
Milton Duchan, Albert Fried-
man, Irving Cane, Sol Wainer,
Theodore Weiss, Arthur Klein
and Novetsky.

Late services at Beth Aaron
Synagogue, scheduled for 8:30
p.m., today, will be sponsored
and conducted by the syna-
gogue's Young People's League.
Leslie Hubert will serve as
cantor, and will be assisted dur-
ing the service by Irene Gordon,
Marilyn Lux and Stuart Silver-
an.
Bernard Porvin, YPL presi-
dent, will offer greetings, and
the sermon will be delivered
by Rabbi Benjamin H. Gorrel-
ick on "Jewish Youth Faces the
Future." A solo will be rend-
ered by Cantor Ihil Gildin.
During a social hour to follow,
a panel of YPL members will
discuss "Israel at- the Cross-
roads." Don Saltz will mod-
erate the discussion of Howard
Baron, David Sterns and Leon
Warner.
The service, is planned espe-
cially for Jewish college youth
in the community who are home
for mid-winter vacations. All
young people are invited..

The annual College Homecom-
ing Service of Temple Beth El
will begin at 8:30 tonight. Five
college students- will speak on
"A Jewish Way of Life for Col-
lege Youth": John Franklin, of
Northwestern University; Edith
Nolish and Sally Bing, Wayne
State University; Sarah Weiner,
University of Michigan; and
Mary Rattner, Wellesley Col-
lege.
Temple Israel invites colle-
gians to a college youth pro-
gram at Sabbath eve services,
tonight at 8:30. University stu-
dents will tell of "personal ex-
periences which have awakened
my senses of identification with
my faith and my people." A
panel includes Jack Bagade, of
Harvard; Elihu Burkow, from
the University of Michigan; and
Vivenne Segal, Wayne State
University. After services, a
continuation of the panel will be
followed by a social hour and
refreshments. An invitational
dinner for Temple Israel high
school graduates and college
youth will occur before services.

"Jews Behind the Iron Cur-
tain" will be the subject for the
Jan. 16 program of Beth Aaron
Men's Club. The event, to begin
at 8:30 p.m., will take place at
the synagogue, announces Na-
than Lux, program chairman.
Guest speaker will be Rabbi
Harold H. Gordon, general sec-
retary and chaplaincy coordina-
tor of the New York Board of
Rabbis. This summer, "Rabbi
Gordon was a - leader of the
rabbinical delegation Which
studied religious life in Soviet
Russia, Poland and Czechoslo-
vakia.
The public is invited to at-
tend the meeting.

Yivo Conference Jan. 19-22
The 31 annual conference of
the Yivo Institute for Jewish
Research will take place Jan.
19-22, in New York.

Newly-organized Cong. Shom-
rey Emunah recently received
a Sefer Torah as the gift of
Cong. Ahavath David, of Mon-
treal, Can.
The presentation was made in
honcir of Shomrey Emunah's
spiritual leader, Rabbi Sholem
Flam, who was rabbi at the
Montreal congregation before
coming to Detroit. Rabbi Flam
is a native of Montreal.
At the same time, announce-
ment also was made by Nathan
A. Borinstein, president of the
new northwest synagogue, that
services at the Labor Zionist
Institute, 19161 Schaefer, have

been changed to a new room so
that worshippers will have a
private entrance to the syna-
gogue.

Chevra Michnayot Elects
Rabbi Halpern as President
At the annual election of the
Chevra Michnayot Study So-
ciety of Cong. Beth Abraham,
the following officers were
elected for the 1956-57 term:
Rabbi Israel Halpern, presi-
dent; Louis Blumenfield and
Herman Weiss, vice-presidents;
Morris Hurwitz, secretary; Max
Ellenbogen, treasurer.

Dissolve Jewish Masons
LONDON, (JTA) — The
Grand Masonic Lodge of
Egypt and the Arab countries
has decided to dissolve all
local Jewish lodges, "in con-
formity with the Arabs' as-
pirations," it was reported
here by the Reuter news
agency..
