Two Conferences to Stuart S. Bass
The annual winter camp and
Judge's Election
reunion of Midwest Camp Ha-

bonim will open with an oneg
shabbat at 8:30 p.m., today, in
the Labor Zionist Institute,
19161 Schaefer. Campers from
many Midwestern states will at-
tend.
The program will signal the
opening of a four-day confer-
ence, which will hold sessions
through Tuesday. The theme of
the program is "Israel Today."
Seminars planned for 2 p.m.,
Saturday, will deal with "Re-
ligion in Israel," "Absorption of
Immigrants" and "The Defense
of Israel."
Leading the discussions will
be Israel Shefer, recently ar-
rived from Israel to direct Ha-
bonim groups in Chicago.
Beginning Wednesday, a sec-
ond conference for older mem-
bers planning to settle in Israel
will take place through Dec. 29.
Arthur Broza, director of
PATWA, will speak on "Profes-
sional Opportunities in Israel."
Other topics to be discussed
are "The Reality of Adjustment
to Life in Israel," "The Develop-
ment of a Specific Israeli Cul-
ture," "Changes in the Kibbutz"
and "The Moshay."
An oneg shabbat, planned for
Dec. 28, will highlight an ad-
dress by Simcha Pratt, Consul
General of Israel: The public is
invited.

Rabbi Halpern's Son Wins
General Motors Scholarship

Lawrence Halpern, son of
Rabbi and Mrs. Israel I. Hal-
pern, of 18681 Santa Rosa, has
been awarded a four-year Gen-
eral Motors Scholarship for un-
dergraduate study at New
York's Yeshiva University.
The scholarship, announced by
Dr. Samuel Belkin, Yeshiva
president, was established last
year. Yeshiva University pro-
vides a four-year scholarship
each year to an outstanding
member of the entering class.

A group of nearly 100 has
formed the Friends of Victor
J. Baum Committee to support
the election of Baum, appointed
to be Judge of the Wayne Coun-
ty Circuit Court.
Baum, of 19340 Pinehurst, was
named to the bench by Gov-
ernor Williams, and goes be-
fore the electorate in the, spring
election in April.
The Friends Committee is
headed by two co-chairmen,

Brezner Elevated
Prosecuring Attorney Gerald
K. O'Brien announced the eleva-
tion of Samuel Brezner to the
post of chief trial lawyer on

Brezner was elected for a

probate judge in 1934. He has

Dr. Louis Finkelstein
Chosen for Inaugural

Dr. Louis Finkelstein, chan-
cellor of the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America, is one of
four clergymen selected by
President Eisenhower to give
the prayers at the inaugural on
Jan. 21.
The others are the President's
pastor, Dr. Edward L. R. Elson,
Archbishop Edward Cardinal
Mooney of Detroit, and Arch-
.bishop Michael of New York.

New adult programs are now
being featured at the Davison
Jewish Center, including adult
hobby , night each Wednesday.
The program offers classes in
copper tooling and enameling,
ceramics, woodworking and
painting.
