Positive Approach to Judaism
Solves Appeal of Yuletide

Friday, December 21, 1956

By the oak-Woodser

Parents who are concerned
because their children wish to
join in the celebration of Christ-
mas need only to stress positive
Jewish values, according to the
suburbs' three rabbinical lead-
ers, Rabbi Mordecai Halpern,
of Conservative Beth Shalom;
Rabbi Milton Rosenbaum, of
Reform Temple Emanu-El; and
Rabbi Yaakov Homnick, of
Young Israel Center of Oak-
Woods.
The three spiritual leaders
said that the feeling among all
rabbis on the subject was simi-
lar—that most children will ac-
cept the simple explanation that
Christmas is a religious holiday
not shared by Jews, and furth-
er that it is not a national holi-
day.

They agreed, independently,
that the most serious prob-
lem encountered is not the
Jewish child seeing the cele-
bration of Christmas pagean-
try by his non-Jewish neigh-
bors, but the Jewish child
who sees another Jewish child
celebrating the holiday.

By stating and restating posi-
tive Jewish values in the home,
the rabbis further concurred,
the simple explanation of the
non-observance of Christmas is
readily accepted by most Jew-
ish children.

niece to a Baltimore department
store some years ago during the
holiday season. When she want-
ed to see Santa Claus, he took
her. She sat upon his lap, but
when he asked what she wanted
for Christmas, she replied, "Oh,
we celebrate Hanukah." That re-
ply, so matter of fact, from a
2%-year-old.
Rabbi Homnick explained the
deep religious significance of
Christmas to gentiles who dec-
orate their homes with trees
and wreaths of holly. He said
that there is much symbolism
in each object used, although
even many non-Jews are not
aware of more than the aspect
of - decoration.
As an example, Rabbi Hom-
nick pointed out that the holly
wreath is supposed to symbolize
the wreath placed on Christ's
head, while the red berries are
taken to Mean the drops of
blood that flowed at his cruci-
fixion.
These, he mentioned, by way
of explaining that even . the
most seemingly incidental dec-
orations have deep religious ap-
peal for Christians, and, as such,
might even be resented if used
by Jews.
The suburban rabbis, working
closely with the Oak Park
School Board, have met with
sincere cooperation in deempha-
sizing Christmas in the public
schools.
