She has warned that a cease
fire between Egypt and Israel
will mean another explosion
sooner or later, for Egypt is
preparin g. new fedayeen
raids into Israel . . . But thus
far she has received the same
answer from Secretary Ham-
marskjold, Lodge and the
British delegation . . . And
that answer is "First things
first . . . The Suez Canal issue
must be settled before one
can even think of considering
Israel-Egypt peace negotia-
tions" . . . The suggestion now
being circulated in the United
Nations is this: An interna-
tional Committee to be ap-
pointed to study the problems
of peace between Israel and
her neighbors with a view of
submitting proposals to the
UN which in turn will then
call upon Israel and the Arab
countries to sit down at a
peace conference table . . . All
of this adds up to the dismal
picture that the state of war
in the Middle East will con-
tinue to exist for quite some
time . . . In the meanwhile
Nasser will be able to mend
his political fences, repair his
prestige and win a great vic-
tory on the issue of the Suez
control.
The writers of Israel and the
editors of the English Jewish
press in the United States have
issued public statements urging
our State Department to take
steps to protect the Jews of
Egypt against expropriation of
their possessions and expulsions
from their homes . . . The state-
ments by Israeli and American
Jewish writers serve to high-
light the importance of the jour-
nalistic profession in Jewish
public affair.
By JOSEPH BRAININ
What is the low down on the
Middle East crisis? . . . The Un-
ited Nations and the Western
Big Powers are not working for
a permanent solution of the
Israel-Arab problems . . . This
is the unvarnished truth ... For
Washington, London and Paris
the Middle East means the Suez
. . . Secretary Dulles thinks
that the patching up of the
Western Alliance and the repair
job to be done on NATO de-
pends on a Suez settlement,
which will satisfy Britain and
France . . . Thus the Israeli-
Arab war is once more relegated
to a secondary minor position
. . . Dulles believes that a long
cooling off period is necessary
before the Israel-Arab question
can be 'tackled . . . But the Israel
question may intrude itself in
the discussions on the SUez .. .
While Washington and London
will try to avoid the question,
Paris is determined to insist
that Israel shipping be given
free passage through the Suez
. . . For Mollet's government
does not wish to spare Nasser
and would rather welcome em-
barassing the Egyptian dictator
. . These are the intentions of
Messrs. Mollet and Pine-au but
it is problematic whether they
can hold out in the light of
France's economic needs which
require American goodwill . . .
And so Tel Aviv feels rather
pesimistic about the whole sit-
uation .. .
Golda Meir is returning to
Israel in a rather defeated
spirit . . . She has discussed
the situation with all key fig-
