Hebrew Benevolent
Marks Fortieth Year

The fortieth anniversary of
the Hebrew Benevolent Society
(Chesed Shel Ernes) was cele-
brated with a dinner at Adas
Shalom Synagogue recently.
David Richman, president of the
organization, opened the pro-
gram. Nathan Wolok was gen-
eral chairman of the event.
Rabbi Samuel H. Prero, the
guest speaker, praised the so-
ciety for carrying on work
which h a s been "sanctified
through the ages." Greetings
were extended by Rabbi Isaac
Stollman in behalf of the Vaad
Harabonim, Joseph Edelman for
the Jewish Community Council
and Joseph Bernstein for the
Jewish Daily Forward. Vocal
selections were rendered by
Cantor Shabtai Ackerman.
The Hebrew Benevolent So-
ciety began in -1916 with the
purpose of providing funeral
• and burial to every Jew, re-
gardless of his financial means.
Its principal founder was Sam-
uel Sandweiss. Beginning from
modest quarters on Brewster
St., it moved its chapel to Fred-
erick St., then to Joy Rd., its
present location. The same type
of service is given to everyone,
although each pays according to
his ability. Rabbi Israel Rock-
ove, executive director of the
society, believes that the society
is unique in the United States,
since the institution is not only
limited to the poor.
