Brandeis-Holmes
Legacy Analyzed

"The Legacy of Holmes and
Brandeis: A Study in the In-
fluence of Ideas," by Dr. Sain-
uel J. Konefsky, published by
Macmillan (60 5th, NY 11), is a
timely volume, appearing on the
eve of the celebration of the
Brandeis Centennial.
COMparing the philosophical
views of the late U. S.. Supreme
Court Justices Oliver Wendell
Holmes and Louis Dembitz
Brandeis, Dr. Konefsky concerns
himself with the distinctive
thoughts of the two men who
served together on the highest
court of the land. -
Inquiring into the doctrines
and methods of Supreme Court
procedures, the author reviews
the events ,which affected the
Supreme Court's actions during
the administrations of Roose-
velt, Truman and Eisenhower.
This is the first comprehen-
sive study of the Brandeis-
Holmes philosophical legacy.
Into the able analysis by Dr.
Konefsky are woven the contri-
butions to American legal his-
tory of such great figures as
Woodrow Wilson, John Mar-
shall, Thomas Jefferson and
many others whose gifts are
linked with American idealism.
Dr. Konefsky, who came to
this country from Russia at the
age of 11, received his Ph.D. at
Columbia University where he
has been a lecturer in Govern-
ment. He is the author of a vol-
ume on the opinions of Justice
Felix Frankfurter. He has won
two Guggenheim Fellowships
and a grant from the Rocke-
feller Foundation.

'VIENNA — The Jewish com-
munity here was unable to pro-
vide any further housing accom-
modations for Hungarian- ref-
ugees, although 600 more have
registered with the community
and were provided with finan-
cial and other assistance.
There are now some 4,040
Hungarian Jewish refugees in
this city alone and another
1,000-2,000 in the provinces.
The community informed the
Austrian government that it had
exhausted all available accom-
modations in hotel rooms, board-
ing houses and private homes
and that from here on in the
government must house Jewish
refugees in camps.
Wilhelm Krell, director of the
community, announced that he
had received information which
led him to believe that several
thousand more Hungarian Jews
would be knocking on the com-
munity's doors in a few days.

Near East Emergency
Causes Isr6e1 to Halt
Development Projects

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

Jerusalem political and mili-
tary developments of the last
few weeks have forced curtail-
ment of certain development
projects as funds budgeted for
them have been diverted_ to new
programs.
Although official figures have
not yet been released, it is esti-
mated that the cut in the de-
velopment budget will amount
to about seven percent.
It is expected that the 20,
000,000 pounds .thus saved from
development projects will be in-
cluded in the added budget to
be submitted to parliament next
week.
This budget is chiefly de-
signed to cover security expen-
ditures and to increase stock-
piles of foodstuffs and raw ma-
terials and possibly to pay, in
part, for the oil pipeline from
Elath.

Relatives of Refugees Urged to Contact Hias

A new regulation of the
State Department granting Hun-
garian refugees preference for
immigration to the United States
if they have relatives in this
country is called to the atten-
tion of Detroiters by Harold
Silver, executive director of
Resettlement Service.
In order to expedite process-
ing, Silver said, people in this
area knowing of relatives who
have escaped Hungary and are

now in Austria should call Mrs.

give her the names of these
refugees.

IT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, December 7, 1956

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
Israel Parliament gave final ap-
proval to a bill authorizing a
40 million pound "Victory
Loan" and a "Victory Tax" to
be imposed on telephone and
transit services and designed to
bring in 20 million pounds. The
vote on the measures, which
was introduced and rushed
through three readings in 24
hours, without debate, received
the approval of all deputies
except the Communists. It will
pay the costs of the Sinai cam-
paign.
The Knesset also passed the
final readings of a bill author-
izing each municipal council to
legislate in the matter of the
breeding and sale of pork. This
was a compromise bill which
had enabled the coalition gov-
ernment to continue after a
Supreme Court decision invali-
dating local laws prohibiting
the sale of pork. At that time,
the religious parties threatened
to pull out of the government
and disrupt the coalition.
A Communist motion in the
_ Knesset to debate alleged mis-
treatment of Arabs in the Gaza
Strip by the Israel Army was
defeated by a. vote of 82 to 3.
Only the Communist deputies
supported the motion.
