Will Marshal Tito Welcome Mufti?

Israel Approves Ashdot Yam as Deep-Water Port

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
Israel Cabinet decided to go
ahead with the building of a
deep-water port and a city at
Ashdot Yam, between the north-
ern border of the Gaza Strip
and the town of Askelon.
A contract for the building
of the city of Ashdot Yam was
signed by representatives of the
Israel Government and a group

of investors headed by Philip
Klutznick, president of B'nai
B'rith.- Mayor Oved Benarni of
Natanya, signed the contract on
behalf of the investors.
The port, on which Israel has
been planning for some time,
would serve the Negev as an
export center for its agricultu-
ral and mineral products. The
port is expected to be deeper
than Haifa, currently Israel's
largest and busiest harbor.

The Mufti was honored
during World War II at Zareb,
Yugoslavia, by the pro-Nazi
Ustachi puppet government.
Will he be received now by
Marshall Tito? A spokesman
for _the Yugoslavian Embassy
in Washington categorically
denied knowledge of such a
visit. But U.S. sources said
that Yugoslavia, while pub-
licizing current visits of Hun-
garian and Romanian leaders,
was seeking to k e e p the
Mufti's coming a secret.

One report is that Tito agreed
at the recent Walta talks to fur-
nish "volunteers." They would
serve in the Egyptian forces
against any Western attempt to
liberate the Suez Canal. The
"volunteers" would be Moslems
from the Bosnian region of
the Yugoslavian a r my o r
militia.
It is thought significant that
Djuro Pucar Stari, "President"
of Bosnia, accompanied Tito to
Yalta. Perhaps it is significant
that Marshal Zhukov took part
in the Yalta meeting. The Suez
issue was certainly discussed.
If the Middle E a s t i s trans-
formed into another Korea, the
possibility exists that Commu-
nist Moslems from Yugoslavia
would serve with the Arabs
against Israel.

During World War II the
Mufti broadcast over Radio
Berlin. He u r g e d Moslems
everywhere to join the Nazis
and slay Jews. His slogan was:
"In Heaven Allah, on Earth
Hitler."

Far from being an actual holy
man of Islam, the Mufti is a pro-
fessional revolutionary agitator.
He did more than any other
Arab to foment the anti-Jewish
disturbances in Palestine in the
1930s. He was originally sup-
ported by British Foreign Office
elements. But Winston Churchill
later described him as the dead-
liest enemy of the British Em-
pire.
In 1941 the Mufti helped en-
gineer the Syrian revolt in col-
laboration with the Nazis. When
the revolt was overthrown by
the Allies, whose ranks included
many Palestinian Jews, the
Mufti escaped to Berlin. There
he became Hitler's chief prop-
agandist on Middle East issues.
He received decorations from
both Hitler and Mussolini.
Berlin records reveal that the
Mufti sought to block the escape
of a trickle of European Jewry
to Palestine. He urged con-
centration camp gassing of more
Jews. His communications with
Heinrich Himmler are a matter
of record. An active recruiter
of Moslems for the SS, it was
in that capacity which he visited
Yugoslavia.
After the war the Mufti's fac-
tion turned - up at Lake Success
as the "Arab Higher Commit-
tee." It actually got recognition
on the United Nations floor.
The Mufti later emerged in
Palestine, agitating Arabs to
take up a r ms against Jews.

'Marjorie' Before Cameras

Milton Sperling, the Warner
producer, said he and writer
Everett Freeman are half-way
through with the screenplay to
Herman Wouk's "M a r j or i e
Morningstar," which Sperling
will attempt to bring before the
cameras late this year.
