book "Judaism and Psychiatry,"
published by Basic Books (59
Fourth, NY 3).
Under the editorship of Dr.
Simon Noveck, the book points
to the solutions to be found for
personal problems in Jewish
teachings. It analyzes the psy-
chological soundness of Jewish
laws and- shows how • Judaism
and psychiatry can meet.
Distinguished scholars parti-
cipate in this . symposium, in-
cluding the eminent psycholo-
gists, Drs. Abraham Blau;
Abraham N. Franzblau, Paul
Friedman, Henry Raphael Gold,
David Kairys, Louis Linn, Mil-
ton Maley, Rollo May, Mor-
timer Ostow, Hector Ritey and
Milton R. Sapirstein.
The participating rabbi s, in
addition to Dr. Noveck, are
Rabbis Edward T. Sandrow,
Alexander Alan Steinbach,
Louis I. Newman, Henry Enoch
Kagan and Dr. Gold, who is
both rabbi and practicing
psychoanalyst.
"Conscience and Guilt," the
subject of the first portion of
the book, views anxiety • Prob-
lems, , and draws upon optimism
in Hassidic lore, "the importance
of joy in living," as Dr. Noveck
describes it in an introduction.
It considers despondency and
depression and draws upon
Judaism's faith in man. It
draws upon the wisdom of the
Jewish sages in facing life's
crises.
