East, West Berlin Push
Plan to Restore Cemetery
Although West and East Ber-
lin youth organizations gener-
ally do not deal with each other,
some of them may join hands in
an effort to restore a local Jew-
ish cemetery, thanks to the
initiative of Lutheran Provost
Heinrich Grueber, one of the
most dedicated and g a 11 a n t
friends of the Jewish people in
Germany.
For many decades, the main
cemetery of the Berlin Jewish
. Community was situated at
Weissensee, at present an East
Berlin suburb and therefore un-•
der the jurisdiction of the small
East Berlin Jewish Community.
The 114,000 graves on the huge
burial ground have been sorely
neglected' during the past 20
years. Some cannot even be ap-
proached because of the over-
grown condition of the cem-
etery.
