ty-regor riattgorsicy inspires Annual
Zionist Organization Balfour Concert
A deeply moving interpreta-
tion of Bruch's "Kol Nidre" fea-
tured the concert by Gregor
Piatigorsky, who is considered
the world's outstanding 'cellist,
at the annual Balfour Concert
of the Zionist Organization' of
Detroit, at the Masonic Temple,
Saturday night.
Ralph B e r'k o w i t z distin-
guished himself as Piatigor-
sky's piano accompanist.
Equally moving was the 'cel-
list's rendition of his own ver-
sion of Kol Nidre, "Atonement,"
for 'cello alone.
Another of Piatigorsky's own
compositions, "Variations on a
Paganini Theme," was the last
number on the program, but an
enthusiastic audience succeeded
in having the 'cellist play three
encores.
The program included selec-
tions from Milhaud, Haydn, Bee-
thoven and Weber.
Prior to the commencement
of the second portion of the
program, Rabbi Morris Adler
delivered a brief address on
the significance of the Zionist
movement, on Israel's rebirth
and on the Maccabean re-
enactment. "The Maccabees

obvious reference to the Is-
raelis' recent military triumph.
After Rabbi Adler's address.

troit, presented to Mrs. Samuel
Feldstein an engraved resolu-
tion in tribute to her late hus-
band who was chairman of last
year's Balfour Concert and who
planned the Piatigorsky event
before his death. Mrs. Feldstein
responded with brief remarks.

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Ro-
mance had the full coopera-
tion of the Israel and Jordan
Governments. The authorities
on both sides put aside their
differences to permit the be-
trothal of attractive Samira
Asikli of Nazaxeth, Israel, a
Christian, to the son of a
prominent family in the
Jordan-held Old City.
The couple, accompanied
by their families, met in a
no-mans-land at the Mandel-
baum Gate for the betrothal
ceremony which was con-
ducted by a priest. On either
side, Israel and Jordan police
stood watchfully as the
couple kissed and separated.
They will not meet again un-
til their wedding.

JAMES ZELLERBACH
WASHINGTON, ( J T A ) —
James D. Zellerbach, industrial-
ist, civic leader and diplomat,
has been named United States
Ambassador to Italy, succeeding
Mrs. Clare Luce.
Zellerbach, born in San Fran-
cisco nearly 65 years ago, has
been associated with a number
of Jewish institutions and is a
national vice-chairman of the
National Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews.
He has served in a number
of government posts, including
as a member of the U. S. dele-
gation to the United Nations,
U. S. representative to the In-
ternational Labor Organization
and head of the Economic Co-
operation Administration mis-
sion to Italy.
Mrs. Meir Assures
UN of Withdrawal
UNITED NATIONS, N. Y.,
(JTA) — Israel is "eager and
anxious" to make arrangements
with the United Nations Emer-
gency Force for withdrawal of
its troops from Egyptian terri-
tory "without dela y," Mrs.
Golda Meir, Israel's Foreign
Minister, told the General As-
sembly.
She said she could not under-
stand how the vast majority of
the representatives, at the UN
could ignore statements made
by Israel's Ambassador Abba
Eban last Saturday, when he
assured them that the equiva-
lent of two infantry brigades
had already been withdrawn
behind the demarcation lines.
The Foreign Minister pointed
out that India's V. K. Krishna
Menon had pledged that he
would amend the Afro-Asian
resolution calli&-ig for with-
drawal "forthwith" if Israel
gave the assurance that the
withdrawal that had taken place
had actually moved the troops
from the Sinai Peninsula behind
the 1949 demarcation lines. ,
She noted that Eban had im-
mediately taken the floor to
give exactly that assurance, but
Krishna Menon sat silent and
made no attempt to amend a
draft resolution which no longer
adhered to the facts.
Immediately after her ad-
dress, Mrs. Meir sent Hammar-
skjold a letter asking him to
discuss with her delegation
"satisfactory arrangements" in
regard to troop withdrawals and
the UNEF.
In response to suggestions by
Mrs. Meir that the UN make its
own investigation about the
manner in which Israel is treat-
ing Arabs in the Gaza strip,
Secretary General Dag Ham-
marskjold assigned two officers
of the United Nations Emer-
gency Force to make such an
inspection.
Mrs. -Meir had denied allega-
tions that Israel was mistreat-
ing the Arabs in the Gaza strip
and had assured Mr. Hammar-
skjold that his representatives
would be given all facilities by
the Israeli authorities in their
investigations. The two officers
named by Mr. Hammarskj old
are Lt. Col. Knut Nelson and

WASHINGTON — The Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith Tuesday made public a
State Department reply to
ADL's protest against continu-
ing Arab discrimination against
American visa applicants of
Jewish faith.
. In a message to Philip Klutz-
nick, president of Bnai Brith,
W i 11 i a m Rountree, Assistant
Secretary of State for Near
Eastern Affairs, said the depart-
ment was glad to "have benefit"
of his views. "However," Roun-
tree added, "we believe our ef-
forts should be focused on re-
moval of basic causes for con-
tinuance of friction between Is-
Israel and its Arab neighbors.
Resolutions introduced by the
U. S. into the United Nations
General Assembly on Nov. 3 are
examples of the type of action
which may assist in that re-
spect."
Commenting on Rountree's re-
ply, Klutznick said, "Permanent
settlement of issues in the Mid-
dle East is devoutly to be hoped
for, and there are none who
pray for it more than we do,
but we cannot accept the prin-
ciple that recognition of privi-
leges of American citizenship
I should be deferred until such a
settlement."
Henry Edward Schultz was
unanimously re-elected national
chairman of ADL at the annual
meeting. Schultz has held the
League chairmanship since 1950.
