Minkin, is now available in a
new e d i t i o n, published by
Thomas Yoseloff . (11 E. 36th,
NY 16).
Rabbi Minkin, developing the
tragedy of the king whom his-
tory treats as a villain, as a
bloodthirsty man who contrib-
uted to the downfall of his peo-
ple, defends him. Analyzing the
history of Herod's time, Herod's
activities, the court intrigues,
his suspicions of those around
him, including his wife Mari-
amne, Rabbi Minkin draws this
conclusion:
"Historians are still grappling
with the question, Was Herod
genius or tyrant, hero or demon,
a superb king or a base assas-
sin? Such was the complexity
of his character that both are
possible. But, whether the one
or the other, he was the only
king of Judea to cast a glow of
splendor over his unhappy coun-
try before its sun set not to
rise again for many a day. Ge-
nius or tyrant, Herod alone un-
derstood how to disentangle the
complicated affairs of his nation
during what were perhaps the
most turbulent years of its ex-
istence and give it at least a
semblance of outward power.
Hero or demon, during his long
reign, he was the mastering
brain, the grappling will and
dominant hand which gave his
country an era of uninterrupted
peace and prosperity such as it
had not known since the days
of King Solomon. The preju
dice, hostility and intolerance of
the whole world have obscured
many of the really splendid
things he had done, or tried to
do. But when the mists of myth
and fable that have hung over
his reputation have cleared
away, Herod will be found to be
one of the most interesting and
fascinating characters the world
has known."
